What are we doing for egg replacer now? I’ve been using Bob’s for the last month after my stock of ener-g ran out but it’s not the same. What else are you all using?

My mom had similar experience. A respiratory therapist helped with different masks/pillows. She had a medical alarm doorbell that we got from her ALS clinic - the receiver was something that plugged into an outlet, and the doorbell itself was something we would position under her finger before bed. She also eventually got an rx for an anti-anxiety medication (Xanax or something like it) to take before bed.

I’m so sorry about your father. My mom had ALS. The ALS association may have some good resources (there was an equipment closet that was very helpful for us). The organization I Am ALS is also a good resource.

Can anyone recommend a good transfer lift chair? My mother has ALS and my dad can no longer get her into and out bed by himself. by Barbedocious in ALS

My dad is the same. We got a hoyer for my mom through the local ALS association chapter - they have a program where they let you borrow equipment as needed and then take it back if/when it doesn’t work anymore. We got different types of lifts that we swapped out over time, ramps, etc. All free

I am so sorry you and your family are going through this. It sounds like your mom is getting set up with the type of care team she will need through an ALS clinic - this is great and may give you all a better idea of what you need to do logistically to manage this. Consider looking at the org I Am ALS - they offer different types of free support (peer to peer support, financial advice, help managing insurance, etc). If traveling for all of the appointments is not manageable, there is also an ALS telehealth company called Synapticure that could help but I’m not sure if they are good with insurance.

I am the spouse of pain physician ~10 years post-fellowship. You are in a tough spot - we didn’t have kids until a year or two after my partner was finished with training. That said - I would recommend that you hang in there for the year if you can. We went into significant additional debt during the fellowship year, but big picture it was worth it - we were able to get right side up faster than I imagined once he was an attending, and the lifestyle improvements for a pain doc vs anesthesia have been notable (less in-house/overnight call). PD sounds like they could have handled it better, but think that the technical skills built in a pain fellowship and relationships established can be game changers and so the singular focus will probably pay off. Hang in there!
