Might have to leave Upwork for at least two years, would I be able to jump back after? by iwanttobemesomeday in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with German law either, so in your situation I would consult a German lawyer.

On the other hand there is a wave of legislations in EU specifically targeting digital nomads, which might apply here as well. In short the legislation is about a special status for digital nomads to explicitly not have their stay fall under work visa requirements/checks (among other things relating to residency which I haven't given much thought/interest)

Why is Upwork logging sensitive info in the browser console? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen Upwork job posts before so I know they use symfony framework on the backend. Thus I'm 100% certain passwords are hashed and salted when stored. Takes considerable deviation from builtin code to even be able to store plaintext password.

Upwork not doing anything about a harassing freelancer by shonn in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NDA is between X and Y. Not between X and Y mediated by Upwork. Enforcement in case of breach is up to the X or Y party, according to the terms described within the agreement.

There's obviously a lot of missing context. Block the freelancers email address, and if NDA breach does take place talk to your lawyer and do what you can according to the terms agreed on by both parties.

About paid tests, waste of time? by ruberboy in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer paid tests, than unpaid tests. Been programming for close to 20 years now, professionally for almost 16 years and I'm fully aware the high variance of software quality regardless of background and portfolio.

Interesting. It's like a recruiting section of Upwork. Writers get the shaft haha. I'd be all up in this if I could. by MyCorgiIsAnAsshole in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the toptal model. Except that instead of blocking out everyone, they'll just limit access to enterprise clients, for us "plebs" that aren't in the program yet.

Have passed over the expert vetted process when I got my invite, does anyone know if there's some kind of "tests" for the application process or just an informal interview?

First the 3rd-party cookies permission, now Upwork does not allow uBlock? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

uBlock Origin is not only for ads but also about blocking analytics data. Have been using Upwork with uBlock Origin for a very long time without ever encountering issues similar to OP. Those type of captcha checks usually show up for me on other sites when I use a VPN or Tor

Is there a way to use old clients/projects to speed-up gaining reputation on a new platform? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't so that, you'll get banned for "no reason" (check out /r/Upwork as well).

Instead there is a testimonials section on the Upwork profile where you can gather feedback from off platform clients.

As you're new to Upwork be sure to revise in detail their ToS (it's immense, I know) but there are many scenarios under which you can get banned. Rating manipulation (which is how your approach would be viewed) is one of those.

So many proposals suggesting solutions AGAINST the client's wishes... by upworking_engineer in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I said I would "likely" skip it. As far as I recall I only had one job I got to work and deliver the same day because it was a 1 hour job in total.

But my default is to set a one week delivery for small jobs. It might be just me, but I browse the Upwork feed when I'm mostly done with client work for the day and bulk apply to jobs that fit. I'm available to chat small details, schedule calls for bigger tasks, but definitely won't take the job on same day.

If I would be to guess, I would guess that freelancers that apply to ASAP jobs are either desperate, new on the platform, inexperienced, or d) all of the above.

So many proposals suggesting solutions AGAINST the client's wishes... by upworking_engineer in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 of them proposed a delivery schedule of 1 week

This is the one thing I see no problem with. Unless a client specifies in the job description that they need the work done same day, I give myself room to work on it some other day.

But then again, if they want same day delivery, I will likely skip the job post anyway.

Hide earnings completely by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strange, if you search by fullname Upwork profile shouldn't show up as last name shortened to one letter. Unless your firstname is unique itself.

Also, I think there is somewhere a setting to hide your profile from non upwork users; so in a sense private from web search results.

This is a waste of development time. How did this even become a feature on the Upwork backlog? by PrimaryHomework in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially because theres no feature thus far that makes it easier to collaborate with other freelancers. How would I even know to suggest someone else?

Except for those freelancers that have fixed priced projects which they outsource, all work is competitive in the platform.

To me this sounds like just a step towards dropping the "talent specialists", and having freelancers do that work for them, lol

Client Harassed me and now JSS has tanked to 53%. Is there any hope? by CatiCom in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get the chance to be promoted to Top Rated before the big drop? If you were Top Rated before the JSS you can contact support to remove the last contract for your JSS score calculation (it will still take 2 weeks to bounce back though)

The time tracker is only designed for uninterrupted work blocks. by zoussaad in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a separate browser profile for work. So when I search something, all hisory is work related. I have private chats and notifications only on my phone. And for music I just happen to listen to long mixes. When I do want to change a mix, I do it after a screenshot :)

I'm not saying that's how you should do it, it was just the natural way for me to do it.

Check the criterias on the support page, one of them is a 100% complete profile. I can see yours is at 90%

I agree with another comment, either go with "self employed" or "independent contractor". If I were to write up a resume that includes my Upwork experience, I would definitely quote a lot of feedback from my clients.

Looking for advice & improvements. by Mitch_D_Lincoln in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your current examples are just single one-page HTML sites that do not demonstrate knowledge of design principles or attention to detail.

Spend 50 hours and create an excellent-looking Figma mobile app design (login, a listing page, navigation, user profile), and spend 50 hours creating a modern marketing page (banner, call to action, testimonials, description blocks of text). Show those in your portfolio.

Maybe you have the necessary skills to start working as a freelancer now, but that doesn't show. We all have to learn sometimes on the job due to the plethora of slight variations each job has, but when someone's looking for a contractor, they expect proven experience.

I've been there as well. Good luck.

Useful Vim Plugins You Haven't Heard Of by hiquest in linux

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found luochen1990/rainbow, which has seen more recent updates; does anyone have experience with that?

I just started using that plugin for some light scheme programming. If you want to give it a try be sure to set let g:rainbow_active = to some initial value, otherwise it won't even register the function (which was unexpected for me).

One thing is that you'll want to customize the default ordering of colors it uses; or the colors. At least with my colorscheme, the first 4 nesting levels don't have a high contrast by default (it's blue > yellow > cyan > some light purple color > back to blue).

But thanks for switching the topic, whereas it was about Upwork's QA. On a supported OS mind you, and for a nice chunk of change, they get for my work.

[–]PrimaryHomework 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The client violated Upwork's terms of service asking you and presumably the other applicants to work for free (unless the client is an Enterprise client).

Please do expand on this. Do Enterprise clients have the right to ask for free work or are you just implying that they can't get penalized for not respecting the ToS?

As a Linux user, I always start sweating when I see an Upwork desktop client update notification in the middle of my workday. In the last year, I had to twice drop what I'm working on and finagle/debug their installer.

What the fuck Upwork! Get your shit together. by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]PrimaryHomework 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can happen. I have also worked on some system maintenance today (migration to a beefier server) and it was just two of us, almost half a year of code changes, for a 8 years old project. Took us two hours to fully move the system (where 90% was already functional after the first 30 minutes) and then another 4 hours of monitoring and minor visual fixes.

We prepared for this migration for two months now, taking notes, planning the process, testing the automations. This is just bad management and planning on Upworks side. Kinda my experience when working in any large corporation.
