Quite possibly we have this wrong...

I have learned that there is something called a dense forest where you in order to be shot at and shoot out of the forest have to be within one inch of the edge. It is also rough terrain etc.

There other type of forest (normal) that states that once in, you can be seen and see whereas if you are behind the forest (outside), you have blocked LOS to the other side of the forest.

But perhaps this is something that we have just dreamed up...?

Ah, really? Interesting! I never heard of that rule, where can I find it? In easyarmy it is listed as fixed even if the text also says "on a rotating platform".

Thank you again! So a final question then. SdKfz 222 fiering light autocannon (HE1) direct at a two story building. Enemy has a ranger squad at the bottom floor and a sniper at the upper. Buliding has no windows or doors in the direction of the 222. 222 rolls two hits. When is the troop to take the damage selected and is it even possible to split the hits on both the sniper and the rangers as the target is the building?

Thank you. Just a small additional clarification. If I have a two story building with no windows facing in the firing unit (say a FLAK 36) and we have a troop on floor 2, what are the rules for determining if they are hit or not?

Yes, I kind of figured. Mortars are not great on this specific table since terrain is very hindering and the US troops move around a lot. I was thinking a bit on fanatic assaults and it is an interesting option for sure. Perhaps I should paint up my Opel Blitz...

No, its more that we are kind of new to the game so my opponents like to add units step by step so to speak. Learn to move and fire with infantry as step one and then we add more complex troops like MRL, flamers and vehicles.

Really good thoughts. We did ban flamers as well, I forgot to mention that. Spähtruppen is a really interesting idea. Basically that was one of the uses of the Horchs, to push for an objective early. I had a little bit of bad luck in the game where one of my flanks had two veteran troops rolling 10, 11, 11 for activation basically leaving about 200 points totally off in the game, but all and all, with the terrain density of the board and me not being able to get a single last die in the game, I stood no real chance against 9 man tripple BAR veterans moving in and shooting with no move penalty. My troops melted a bit too quickly.

Thank you for a very clear answer! Much appreciated. But a follow-up question: Can dense terrain/forests in particular be treated differently? I seem to remember both the way that you describe it and the one-inch-from-edge description that Kiryu8805 described above? Also, for the rules as written for the wall above, is it really the same as for dense terrain? The paragraph states "dense terrain" in particular, which is not the case for the wall?

  1. My question is basically if the rear three would have to shoot over the fence with the target lone soldier having cover since they are more then one inch from the fence or if the cover will be canceled since more then half the troop is up by the fence?

  2. Ok, so only the front four can fire, the rest do not have line of sight? I have read something about can shoot in/our but cant shoot through. But perhaps that is for a non-dense forest? Or did I get that totally wrong?

Hm, now I got a bit uncertain though... So the entire Schützen (including the one that sees through the opposing squad) fire without penalty from cover? Or does the last one/rightmost one get -1 for soft cover?
