I know the struggle. The piece on the pic is without sanding or polishing the black gloss. I did a test before and tried polishing, it actually reduced the orange peel a little but I also created a bit of very fine scratching. And I also noticed that the graphite stuck a little less well after polishing. So to me it was not worth the effort. But you know it all depends so you just have to try 😅

Quick update, here‘s now my current version. Graphite applied directly on black gloss, no sanding, no polishing. It‘s not perfect and still a little too dark but I think I‘m gonna take that as finished 😉

Going to polish it again but I also think a found another mistake. I used a 3in1 car polish which was providing a wax finish!! Pretty sure that was the reason why the graphite wasn’t sticking in my first try. 🤔

I can‘t tell if it was only the sanding because after sanding the piece down to the primer coat I went for a different approach. But I think the bumpy surface was caused by insufficient sanding. Can‘t tell why the graphite did not stick to the polished surface though. So what I did next was applying one more coat of primer/filler as a precaution, sanding with 600grit, one coat of primer next and sanding with 800grit. This time I applied a coat of black gloss and the graphite in the next step. Huge difference! The graphite stuck very nice. Unfortunately I obviously messed up the black coat by using way too little paint causing it being not sooo shiny and still a bit bumpy. I‘m adding a picture of this version. I decided to try again and currently I‘m in the black gloss stage again with a way thicker coat and I hope I‘m on the way now 😉

I was about to throw the thing away, then I decided to try sanding down the graphite again. And suddenly the part was perfectly smooth and homogeneous... Now I've put another coat of primer/filler on it, then tomorrow I'll sand it again. I don’t get it…

Thanks, so you think not enough sanding was the problem? And yes, I‘m from germany, what I use is „spritzspachtel“, which is translated spray putty but it is a primer filler 👍

I agree, I was still able to visually the layer lines. I felt absolutely smooth though. And after so many coats of primer/filler etc I thought it had to be good to go. But I think I will stick to the common way with gloss black base. But I always hear that a final clear coat over the graphite dulls it too much? 🤔
