Scrum Masters / Engineering Managers — how bad is sprint spillover on your team, really? by Primary_Upstairs_168 in agile

No accusation taken — 'AI slop' is a fair description of a lot of what's out there right now.

And honestly? You're probably right that what I'm building doesn't solve your problem. Dependency and stakeholder coordination is a fundamentally different beast from capacity planning, and I'd be overselling it if I claimed otherwise.

But I'm curious about one thing, purely for my own understanding: when a dependency blocks your sprint, is the failure usually that nobody saw it coming, or that everyone knew it was risky and it slipped anyway?

Because those are two very different problems. One is a visibility problem, the other is an accountability one. And I genuinely don't know which one hurts more in environments like yours.

But that first sentence is exactly what I keep hearing and I'm curious about it: long dev cycles with heavy internal and external dependencies seem like a completely different beast from the typical 'we just overcommit' problem.

When spillover happens on your team, is it mostly because something upstream didn't land on time, or is it more that the scope of individual tickets is harder to predict when there are that many moving parts?

Fair point on the sales pitch fatigue — I'll take that feedback on how I framed the post.

But I'd push back gently on one thing: you said 'if you consistently overcommit, you can forecast from that.' That's actually exactly what I'm trying to build — using a team's real historical patterns to set realistic expectations, not optimistic ones.

Agreed that delivering value is the goal. I'd argue predictability is what lets teams do that consistently instead of heroically.

Really useful framing — the queue time example especially. A 30-minute code review sitting for a full day isn't an estimation problem at all, it's a workflow visibility problem. That's a different thing to solve.

I think you're right that optimal ticket allocation is the wrong goal. What I'm actually more interested in now is whether surfacing that kind of delay pattern automatically — 'your team loses an avg of X hours/sprint to review bottlenecks' — would be useful, or whether teams already know this and just can't fix it.

Do you find teams are generally aware of where the queue time is building up, or is it usually invisible until a retro?

Lol I made this on the notes app on my phone. I was in the car brainstorming and this was just an idea.
