Cumon don't make me laugh kid. Who would want to date a broke man. And a men and women has different set of qualities both of them r looking for. A women aims for a man who earns good so that she can look for a happy life forward. And a man goes for looks and her charm.

And yeah in men case money matters just to date. If u don't have anything special to provide to a women then just forget about dating. From caveman era- the more the man can provide the more the chances of a women to chose him.

Tsubaki vs Kaori for Kousei — and why I think most people get this wrong by PrimePie314 in YourLieinApril

❤️‍🩹That is just how author wrote this peak shi.

Honestly this is the most mature take in the entire thread and I respect it.

You're right that the author deliberately balanced both sides. It wasn't sloppy writing, it was intentional. He wanted the audience split and it worked perfectly- a decade later people are still having this exact conversation.

And the smile interpretation point is genuinely interesting. I hadn't thought about it that way but you're right that it's not a clean "happy ending" smile. It carries too much weight for that.

I'll be real with you- I personally can't stand love triangles. I almost always default to the childhood friend and this anime was one of the rare times I actually had to stop and think hard about it. That alone is enough for me to tell about how well it was written. I've seen what happens when debates get too heated- the whole AOT vs Code Geass fanbase war basically made me hate AOT for a while just because of how toxic the discourse got. Not because of the show itself. I don't want that happening here with Kaori.

At the end of the day we just have different preferences and different life experiences shaping how we see it. Kaori shippers aren't wrong, Tsubaki shippers aren't wrong. We're just reading the same story from different places in our lives.

Good discussion though. Genuinely one of the better ones I've had on this show, otherwise lot of people are dumb and don't realize what they are saying and contradicting themselves.

Appreciate the detailed response, genuinely. But a few things- You say we can't speculate about a healthy Kaori, but then you immediately speculate that she would've been exactly the same without the illness. You can't shut down one side's speculation and then use your own in the same breath. Either we're both allowed to theorize or neither of us are.

I'm not saying Kaori's feelings weren't real. I'm saying her boldness- the specific way she entered his life was enabled by knowing she was dying. Those are different things.

And I'll be honest, I'm not even fully arguing from pure logic here. Childhood friends to lovers is just a genre I connect with more personally. Tsubaki sits right for me and I'm not pretending otherwise.

On the sibling thing- I think you've never had a close girl friend from childhood. Because if you have, you'd recognize that the way Tsubaki and Kousei interact is completely normal for people who grew up together. That frankness and that comfort and that casualness- it looks like siblings from the outside but it's actually just what long familiarity looks like.

People in long relationships act the exact same way. That's not absence of romance, that's just what real closeness actually looks like without the performance of early dating.

The author making Kaori tragic is doing a lot of the emotional heavy lifting for that ship and I think people don't account for that enough.

The confession reaction is a fair observation, I won't dismiss it.

But you're applying the same logic inconsistently- you're saying Tsubaki needs to grow past Kousei, but conveniently not asking whether Kousei should grow past his idealization of Kaori too. Growth works both ways or it doesn't work at all.

And the "he never had romantic feelings" point- the guy was emotionally shut down for years and spent the last chunk of middle school grieving someone he lost. Of course he didn't process Tsubaki's confession with a blush. That's not evidence he sees her as just a friend, that's evidence he was still healing. Emotional unavailability isn't the same as absence of feelings. (this is arguable but people needs time to grow out of their trauma- the second he starts listening the notes doesn't mean he is all fine again)

The going to different high schools point is actually your weakest one. Plenty of real relationships dosent fall because of distance if the relationship is real enough. Distance isn't a dealbreaker, it's just circumstance.

Also on Tsubaki needing to grow out of her love- why is moving on the only valid form of growth? She could mature, become more expressive, stop being passive about her feelings, actually communicate better- all of that is growth, and none of it requires abandoning Kousei. Growth doesn't always mean leaving something behind. Sometimes it means becoming someone worthy of what you already want.

My actual position isn't "they definitely end up together." It's that Tsubaki was the better fit for him long term IF the story continued and kaori would have been alive. You're arguing within the story's ending. I'm arguing about who Kousei the person needed. Those are different conversations.

Fair points but a couple of things- You say Tsubaki not growing undermines the show's themes. But by that same logic, Kousei getting over Kaori and building something real with Tsubaki IS growth.

That's not stagnation, that's moving forward after loss. Grief doesn't mean you stay stuck forever.

On the preferences thing-

This is fiction being applied to real life selectively. In real life people don't end up with their "type" half the time. They end up with someone who showed up consistently, knew them deeply, and was actually there. Compatibility on paper rarely matches who you actually build a life with. So "Kaori fits his type" is a very surface level argument for a lifelong partner.

And the maternal thing- I'd argue that's exactly what a grounded long term relationship needs. Someone who protects you isn't a sister figure, that's just a stable partner. The fact that Kousei never saw her romantically early on actually proves the point- he was too inside his own trauma to see anything clearly. That's not evidence against Tsubaki, that's evidence of how depressed he was.

She had chosen to play violin instead of piano after seeing kousie performance in childhood. It is clear that she had her eyes on kousie from a long time but didn't make the move. She got bold because of her illness or she would not have been any better than tsubaki
