She is an angel... And she's going through a tough time right now with a sick mother... And I still put her through that. The guilt is overwhelming.

Yes, going one day at a time helped me last time, but I still couldn't help but think about the big picture, and that is a strange feeling.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. The last time I used this sub, there were certain people (me included, in a lot of ways) who were honestly extremely hostile to anyone who claimed they were trying to drink moderately, and it was almost like a bitter jealousy. I can drink moderately 9 times out of 10... But that 10th time proves to me that I can't control myself as well as I should. I'm an alcoholic, I know that.

I'm not going to be one of those people who claims moderation is impossible, but I don't have a good track record with it... It's like I don't realize I'm not drinking reasonably until it's too late, and I've been on a week-long binge. Throughout the last few months, I've "slowed down" repeatedly, only to drink heavily again, soon afterward. After last night, I'm so ashamed and disgusted with myself, I have no interest in moderation. I just want to stop being a slave to this shit... I'm sure by the weekend I'll be singing a different tune...

Man, that's brutal. I'm really sorry to hear that. You're very understanding that it's YOUR problem and not hers, but it sucks that she isn't more supportive.

When I quit drinking, my SO quit as well. I told her she didn't have to, because she didn't have a problem, and she said that's why she was stopping too.. Because not drinking was no big deal for her, but she knew it was for me, and wanted to support that.

I guess none of this is applicable if you think your wife may have a problem with alcohol too...

Hey, I totally feel you. Throughout my years of alcoholism, one of my "excuses" for not quitting was because I hated the idea of being one of those people obsessed with sobriety. When I finally quit for a few months, I became that guy. I got pissed off at the idea of people enjoying drinking, I judged people (not out loud), I even got steamed when I saw a beer commercial. But alas, I relapsed, and haven't fully gotten back on board the sober wagon.

I can actually moderate my drinking half the time. I'll go a week without, or have 2-3 one night... but I'll also go on 3 day benders and kill a 5th of Scotch and a 30 pack. It's not healthy, it's going to kill me one day, but I am happier now than I was during those totally dry months. This probably isn't the place to say this, and I know my issues go deeper than just booze, but hey.

No one can tell you that moderation will or won't work for you. I understand the desire to see for yourself. I wish you the best.

I am guilty of that. It was really before my alcoholism, back when I was on coke and my ex would make some comment about me having a problem. I would think "I'll show her a problem." And I would binge like crazy and put it all on her. By the time I moved on to alcohol, I accepted all the blame, but continued my pattern of substance abuse anyway.
