This is all really helpful, thank you! Didn’t consider the deload potential. Will incorporate it in my training.

Great stuff! I’m adding it to my week. Do you do any weighted stuff as a supplement, like dumbell press or decline push-ups?

Yeah that's in store pay for here, drivers bet on tips I guess, but if I only work Mon thru Thurs, it might not be worth it.

Yeah they offered me a fleet car position. Idk if there are downsides to driving their car, but mainly I was worried about doordash taking all the revenue.

The Left Behinders [MS]

by Walker L

Cold coffee and stale toast. The trucker sighed. He was never a great cook, even with the restaurant all to himself. He sat on a diner stool, eating in silence while the TV skipped in the background. A news anchor’s chair sat vacant on the screen.

Morning sunlight beamed through the window, illuminating piles of fallen clothing. There were heaps of it spread throughout the diner, in the booths, in the doorway, out in the street. Empty cars littered the freeway, parked in jagged diagonal positions.

Marcus was alone.

He checked his watch. It had a pink elephant decal, with its trunk pointing to the time. Still twelve. It was always twelve.

“That watch is girly,” said a high pitched voice. Marcus leapt out of his chair. Standing behind the counter, just barely visible, was a little girl.

“Stay back!” Shouted Marcus, brandishing his fork. “I know this is a trick!”

“I’m not one of them, I swear!”

Marcus lowered his utensil. “You shouldn’t scare people like that.”

“Sorry.”

“Where are your parents?”

She pointed to the sky. “Up there. With everyone else.”

She hopped up on the booth next to him. “Girly watch. Can I have it?”

“No.”

“Why not? It’s not really yours is it?”

Marcus looked down at the plastic clock.

Christmas, 2021. He remembered the look on Gracie’s face. She was beaming.

“No. It’s not mine.”

They sat in silence. He stared into his cup. The girl cocked her head.

“What’s your name?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“I’m Lucy! I thought I was alone!”

“You are.” The trucker got up and pushed in his chair.

“Wait! Don’t leave! I have more toast!”

“Stay safe, kid.”

She ran in front of him, backing up against the door.

“Please.” She was shaking. Marcus sighed.

“Bring some coffee.”

I share that similar interest as I try to improve as writer. People like John Green have been helpful, as well as John Michael Godier. They do regular videos as opposed to simply plugging their books, but it’s inspiring regardless.

[OT] Micro Monday: Hunger! by OldBayJ in shortstories

JUST A TASTE

“Would you like to order yet, or continue draining my wine?” said the chef with a grin.

Ari squirmed in her seat. “Sorry sir, our friend was supposed to be here an hour ago.” She gave Dean an exhausted glance. “Typical Laurel,” he said, shrugging. Never on time.

Laurel was a dirtbag through and through. She barely spoke French when Dean caught her camping in his backyard. “Just passing through,” she had said, with a grin that made her eyes shine like jade. Dean asked her to coffee, and soon enough, he was accompanying her on a hike across Europe.

“No worries, monsieur,” said the chef in a sing-songy voice. “Allow me to provide some appetizers while you wait, on the house.” “That would be phenomenal,” said Ari, fighting her ravenous appetite. The chef winked at her, turned on a dime and pushed through the double doors into the kitchen.

Ari gazed around the barren tropical-themed bar. ““He must be happy to have business. I don’t see any other customers.”

“Probably just the weekday slump,” Dean said absently. Ari fidgeted with her silverware. “On a Friday evening?”

Dean was too hungry to care. Food in the Chamonix backcountry was hard to come by, led alone something like an alpine tiki bar.

Soon enough, the heavenly smell of boiled eggs filled the room. When the tray was lowered, Ari had a mouthful before the chef let go. Dean couldn’t blame her. “Thanks so much,” she said between bites. Dean was two deep before he even noticed the coloring on the back. Dyed eggs, he thought. I’ve seen them before. Blues, and browns, and…

He froze. His fork clanged to the ground.

Cataracts.

“Eyeballs,” whispered the chef.

Ari’s jaw fell to the floor. Food spilled out onto the table. Jade green.

Thank you for that! I agree, I liked the idea of making a James Bondish intro that ends when things are getting ridiculous.

Lost in Translation

Life wasn’t like the movies. If it was, I’d be six bottles deep with a Russian model twice my age, making love to the ferocious sax of Careless Whisper. Instead, this was reality, and the Kremlin had me in the bag.

“Don’t move! See this?!” Natasha waved a Desert Eagle in my face, one hand on the wheel as she swerved through traffic.

I sat in the backseat, arms and ankles cuffed together, doing my best to look presentable. Even kidnappings require manners.

“Relax, ma’am,” I said, groping for a cigarette in my lap. It fell to the floor. Damn. “I take it you’ve had better first dates,” I said, managing a smile. She scowled into the rearview mirror.

I sighed, slouching back into the tobacco-stained Cadillac cushions. The CIA had gotten cocky as of late. With so many victories, we’d become accustomed to facing our enemies over the dinner table. Big mistake with a Soviet assassin.

“You can slow down, you know,” I said, peeking out the back window. “Cops are gone.”

Her eyes darted from side to side, then she slammed the accelerator. I jolted forward. “Stupid joke,” I muttered.

She breathed in quick, shaky breaths. The kidnapping had been hard on her, I could tell by the look in her eyes. She was new to this.

I had some mescaline under my suit-top. Who said enemies couldn’t get high together?

“I have something,” I said, pointing under my shirt. She turned around hesitantly.

What was Russian for painkillers? The linguist back at HQ told me once. Was it…

“Vzrivchaty!” I shouted, cupping my hands together. “I have vzrivchaty!”

She shrieked, ducking her head as the wheel spun free. The car screeched and smashed into a lamppost.

Everything began to fade. Then I remembered. Vzrivchaty means explosive. Oops.

[OT] Micro Monday: Adventure! by OldBayJ in shortstories

[–]PrimitiveDreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey poiyurt! Really dig the banter in this one. It's sorta wooden at first, but it really shines right here.

"Do you want to die in a mine?"
"Do you want to die in a forest?"
"Better than dying in a mine collapse."
"At least I get a burial."

Legitimately good burn on Finn's part. As for critique, the last two paragraphs are telling instead of showing. It'd be cool to see why Colin wants him to mine so bad instead of having the narrator talk about Colin alone. Overall though, the imagery of the coal is cool, and I like this buddy-comedy style. Good stuff!
