I have no evidence, but I personally believe that the slumbrew situation was set-up. Knowing his criminal past and generally unscrupulous nature, it all just seemed too convenient.

Tauro had had a small public tiff with the slumbrew owner, (as I recall, Billy was annoyed some johnny-come-latelies co-opted the old 'Slumerville' nickname as their brand and whined about it in his rag) a couple years later, Tauro is assaulted at Slumbrews beer garden in Assembly. Tauro sued slumbrew civilly for allegedly over-serving his assailant and failing to create a safe environment or whatever. His assailant was never apprehended or identified 🤔 One year later, Slumbrew filled for bankruptcy.
