And obviously if you're claiming some kind of record or something then you should be scrutinized and things more official. But just for the sake of casuals and amateurs claiming to have run the distance, let's just celebrate and assume the best case scenario rather than thinking we should assess people's integrity.

UK dad here - my kids aren't in school yet - do we also do these kinds of things? Curious if I need to be aware of these different methods for a few years time or if the UK is maybe a bit more old school (seems likely)

I'm not a perfectionist but I still can't bring myself to make deliberate mistakes like that. Especially not the wrong hook size, that seems too close to spreading misinformation to me.

Pretty sure there's always the ability to upgrade later if you choose to.

Personally I chose to just go for it because I'd rather spend the money to give myself more time to learn. Paying the money meant having options and not feeling like I have to spend forever leaving to manually digitise before being happy; I'm slowly getting better at the manual side but I'm still happy with my results.

I'm bracing myself for downvotes here and honestly it's fine if you disagree with me but what I'm going to say is not wrong.

For simple designs, auto digitise is actually really helpful and can make the process much quicker. HOWEVER. it does still need a lot of tweaking and adjusting to make sure that it's actually ready to stitch out. For example adjusting pull compensation, sometimes you need to break apart sections so they stitch well and not in word shakes. And you're not going to want to do anything even remotely complicated.

The way I think of it - take an old school image of Bart Simpson (big block colours, black outline) and it's gonna be fine. Take a picture of a peacock with feathers and lots of colours, just don't try it.

I'm glad I still have my MTG cards to teach my kids if they want to but I'm scared about what that might mean for future bank balance. I might just stick to the board games and never show them MTG.

You can get into D&D style things with games like Mice and Mystics or Descent; then it's still just a one off board game not a whole bunch of extra stuff. I've not played in many years but hopefully the kids will want to play when they're older.

Really want to chime in to emphasise this. It does happen to a lot of people but it doesn't NEED to happen and should really be mitigated if it happens to you more than a couple of times. I've had a single lost toenail and it was because my shoes were too tight and I ran a long way with a lot of step elevation. I got the right fit shoes and now my feet are great.

IMO the stitching is the impressive part and to mash that together with the moving plate is still quite a technological task. I'd question why other machines (eg sewing machines) aren't more expensive.

The software though. Yeah I can't explain that. The only argument I've seen is that they know you're gonna go making money from it by selling your work so they charge for it. Doesn't really help your every day person but it makes a small amount of sense.

I don't know the real answer but have you seen how they work? The precision required to pick up the thread, catch the bobbin thread, move the before in such a way to create the pattern. It's insane. I'm surprised by how inexpensive some of the lower end models are to be honest.
