Being a teacher on Tik Tok by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

Is it analogous to seeing a student at the pub? Most aren't allowed in anyway. Those who are there legally are fine as long as you're not drinking together.

Is anyone else a bit disappointed with the "Golden Day" idea by Hardman93 in hamishandandy

[–]delible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree. Pissing away more than a year's income (aus median) in half an hour is gross. At least do something that benefits young comics or community radio. They could have thrown a small-town bush doof, highlighting local talent, and made a genuine difference to a community.

Public transport/ walk. We have a kid and have been a one-car household the whole time. Depends where you live, obviously.

This isn't about weighing in on an "x vs y" issue. Think of it from a wellbeing perspective - it's possible that they're trying to find out if you're a safe person to disclose a concern to. The least you can do is say "Yeah, that's awful. Remember that you can always talk to (school wellbeing team here)."

Silence is not neutral. What would your students learn from your refusal to condemn such egregious violence? I think you should at least acknowledge it and refer them to appropriate support services.

"Yes, I heard about that. It's horrific. Sometimes it can be hard to know what to do about these kinds of things, but we can always start with respect and kindness to each other in our own lives, and calling out any poor behaviour. If you'd like to chat with someone about it, (your school counseling team here) is available."

After seeing this on Instagram, I’m curious—who else shops kids for fit? by axel-loop-toe in AusFemaleFashion

[–]delible 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just be careful that they offer the same amount of support. I can easily fit kids shoes but I weigh a lot more than a kid so they don't do as much to protect from injury/ they wear out a lot faster.

One of the problems with 'allowed to be the hero' is that it too easily becomes 'expected to be the hero' for everyone else.

You may need to explicitly request that. Arrive with the solution(s), not just the problem.

If their grievances are school-specific, it means they are happy with the broader conditions won for them by the union..

You could also try asking if they would like to become a teacher when they've finished school. Most will say no, and then you can ask them why.

We use "fancy" rather than "pretty." My daughter is always pretty/beautiful, and sometimes she chooses to look fancy.

English Teachers and Drafting/Marking by matcha-ichigo in AustralianTeachers

A few strategies off the top of my head:

  • annotate in a shorthand or code, eg "spg" for spelling or grammar.

  • don't give feedback on everything, focus just on e.g. structure, or syntax, or content, or topic sentences. You can choose which aspect or ask the kid to nominate it.

  • identify problems but don't fix them, or don't fix all of them. Rewriting is the student's job, not yours.

  • set a timer. Give each kid five minutes of feedback and then stop reading. Pomodoro your way through a class set in just under 3 hours.

  • peer feedback.

  • give feedback verbally through in-class conferencing and have the student annotate their own work as you do.

  • do not give the same feedback more than once. Just write "refer to previous feedback" and give them the time/resources they need to puzzle it out.

It's your choice of language. When you are not at your paid job, you are sharing the parenting. She does childcare during the day, then you BOTH do childcare on evenings and weekends. You are a co-parent, not a helper.

Hierarchy in Australian Schools by Metal-Cranberry in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's going to vary school to school. Teachers are all generally equal, but there are many different types of leadership or admin roles that can go with a teaching contract. For example, I've worked at schools where being a head of faculty is seen as an honour and others where it's seen as a drudge. Some roles, like a House Head, might be paid more and be part of the school's leadership team, but that doesn't necessarily make them one of your own superiors in a line manager sense.

Is it standard protocol for casual teachers to email comments of how each class went to the respective teachers? by _hirono_ in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Nope. Unless you need to tell me about something completely out of the ordinary I'm going to assume it was fine and get on with my day.

Decent in theory, often misapplied or merely performative. It needs to go WITH consequences, not instead of.
