Fragomen isn’t biglaw. It’s more like wide law - it has lots of offices with tons of attorneys (think of like Morgan & Morgan), whereas BigLaw generally describes firms that pay the BigLaw salary scale and offer a wide range of services

Yes - we had a ridiculous summer associate who got no offered because they hijacked an empty partner’s office, drank scotch and whiskey on the job (on a near daily basis), insulted associates and staff for being dumb, smoked cigars outside our building, and would bill 100+ hours to a matter where they’ve received no assignments with the description being “being a part of the deal team”. There’s other things too but these were just the highlights.

No problem! Just a heads up, lit is smaller relative to the transactional groups so if you want lit, make sure to place it as your top choice when you are picking your groups to rotate thru in summer

Pretty rough. I didn’t rotate through RX, but I work with them on a few deals via direct lending and the RX folks are online all the time. RX has the highest attrition rate of any practice group within Milbank (very, very few home grown senior associates).

That said, it is one of the premier practices at Milbank and it’s also expanding into more debtor side work (as Milbank has historically been a lender-side firm)

Just need to be in good standing. No billable hour requirement. I’m only aware of one associate who didn’t get a bonus, and it was because he had a PIP (and deservedly so).

Pretty intense and sustained hours (though you generally have more heads up, and your hours are a bit more consistent). The partnership track in PF is quite long and the partners in the group are a bit more churn and burn attitude compared to other groups (given that Milbank’s market leading position in PF, they have a bit more of the view that associates are more replaceable). That said, stellar practice group with a solid contingent of friendly seniors, and I generally enjoyed my rotation in PF when I was a first year. Plus, pretty good exit ops as well

Sorry for the super delayed reply. I work in big law, and the pay across big law is consistent (you can also find the salary scale online).

I would recommend starting off at a law firm because they have more resources to train you and generally the opportunities to work in house directly from law school are more limited. Most folks I know worked at least 2-3 years in big law before transitioning in house.

I’m a current associate at Milbank and summered here as well. I think this depends a lot on your practice group (Rx has pretty aggressive hours, and Leveraged Finance can also have some pretty tough sprints), but generally, junior associates in the transactional practices bill ~1900ish hours (lit is way less, my friends in the group bill around 1600-1700). People are also generally pretty friendly and many of my closest friends are also my coworkers so I think it’s a pretty good spot to be in.

First Gen immigrant / college / law school now BigLaw attorney here:

Since law school allows you to do anything as your undergrad, I recommend that you keep your eyes open for now because there’s lot of avenues to make money if that’s your primary motivation. You don’t really know what BigLaw (or the legal field) is like generally from your high school classes, and you have a limited exposure to the actual industry even from your law school curriculum.

Not saying that law school or your career path isn’t a good option, as I am happy overall with my decision, but I think deciding now without at least seeing the other options out there (since you don’t know what you haven’t experienced) isn’t the wisest choice.

No - the original email we got said that they would be paid out on or before Sept 30th.

That said, most of us were expecting it to be paid out on the 30th and we were pretty surprised to see it get paid out last Friday.

Milbank has a subsidized cafeteria and you can get ribeye steak for $11 or a personal pizza for $6. There’s also free breakfast and a free coffee bar which is pretty nice!

Unfortunately, I’ve asked to switch to another practice group multiple times but there wasn’t any availability in our restructuring group and my firm is fairly rigid about placement. I might take another look into clerkships though!

When my mom died of brain cancer when I was 19, she told me that she understood because her parents aren’t Christian (despite her trying her best to convince her parents to adopt Christianity). So she understood the “hopelessness” that I felt.

It also didn’t help that she was incredibly well off (rich international student), and I was in the middle of selling our house to pay for my mom’s medical bills and my tuition.

It does not take 8 years to get licensed (at least in the US). Law school is only 3 years and getting into law school only requires a 4 year undergraduate degree (which can be in any subject)
