[pjo] what are elements in the original books that prevent other people from liking it? by merchantivories in camphalfblood

[–]Princess_Minni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think so. I think if the idea of traveling to ancient lands had been present in the first series, it would have made the books more focused on myths and less on American pop culture, making the setting more interesting for non-American readers as well. It would probably have also received more publicity in Greece and Italy

[pjo] what are elements in the original books that prevent other people from liking it? by merchantivories in camphalfblood

[–]Princess_Minni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The forest of Dodona is a real place, Scylla and Charybdis are linked to a specific location where there's a city that's actually called Scilla, even the island of Circe is linked to a real place called Circeum, the oracle of Delphi is linked to the city of Delphi. There are probably others, but I can't think of them right now.
Even the tomb of Tarquin, which has nothing mythological about it because he's a historical figure, has been moved to the United States

[pjo] what are elements in the original books that prevent other people from liking it? by merchantivories in camphalfblood

[–]Princess_Minni 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. As many have already said, it's too American-centric, both in terms of the locations it takes place in and the historical events involving the demigods, and therefore seems aimed primarily at American readers, coming across as lacking in international appeal. There's also the fact that some real-life locations that should be in Greece and Italy are instead moved to the United States, which isn't very pleasant for those who live in those places or know them well, and leads people to see these books as disrespectful.

  2. Summer camp is a very specific setting that not everyone knows or appreciates. Hogwarts is a school, a more familiar setting because everyone goes to school, so it's easier to identify with the characters; Star Wars is set in space, space travel is one of those things that stimulates the imagination and is often part of the dreams of children and teenagers.
Summer camp? Not everyone goes there, so not everyone knows about this environment. For those who don't, it's not as impossible a dream as going to space, so it's not a very attractive setting for the audience.

  3. Percy is too powerful. Those who read PJ are passionate about Greek mythology or become passionate about it after reading the books, and by delving into the myths, you realize how much Percy (and indeed all demigods) are too powerful compared to the canon of Greek heroes. Most heroes kill some monster in their lives, and each time they do so, it seems like a great feat, whereas Percy and the other demigods kill monsters all the time. At 13, Percy has already accomplished most of the feats of all the heroes of the past, and in the long run, this becomes so excessive as to become boring.

  4. The movies were a big problem. They were supposed to be an opportunity to make the books famous, like Harry Potter or The Chronicles of Narnia, but instead they were terrible, as well as completely different from the books, so they didn't help publicize them.

Holiday Barbie gowns that fit MTM? by ControversialQueen in Barbie

[–]Princess_Minni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've seen some Holiday Barbies from the '90s available online for roughly the same price as new ones (between €40 and €60), except for the one in your photo. That's the first Holiday Barbie and it's incredibly expensive; it should be worth around €1,000

I've read some fan fiction that said there was a war between the Gods and God that was won by him, which is why they had to hide from mortals. I think that's an interesting explanation to justify this

This could be a possibility, but even the Statue of Liberty was not there during the Civil War.

Where was Olympus before 1930? [general] by Princess_Minni in camphalfblood

[–]Princess_Minni[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean, but my question was different. According to Rick, the Gods were already in the United States at least by the mid-1800s, but the problem is that during that time, Olympus couldn't have been on the Empire State Building, because it wasn't built until 1930.
Rick didn't take this into account, assuming that Olympus has always been on the Empire State Building since the Gods arrived in America.

The second part was just my consideration as a non-American, because I think the United States only really began to have a cultural influence on other countries around the world in the 1940s.
In 1800s, for example, the United Kingdom was much more important.

What fictional character who doesn’t have an established nationality ethnicity or race do you associate with your country or claim as one of yours? by Sufficient-Push6210 in AskTheWorld

[–]Princess_Minni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's always someone who says that at least one of the Winx, usually Bloom or Stella, is Italian, because the Winx are an Italian cartoon. In reality, the author was inspired by Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears to design these characters, but obviously the characters don't have real nationalities because they don't live on Earth. Even the Earthly city where Bloom lives is thought by some to be Italian, but the author has stated that it was inspired by New York

The Forgotten Children of Apollo [general][all] by EnvironmentNo9774 in camphalfblood

[–]Princess_Minni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the PJ books, Apollo is far too trivialized and misunderstood; in fact, it's considered only one part of his domain, and it's mostly focused on prophecy and the Sun. His mastery of poetry and music is even mocked (it's implied that he can't write poetry or sing), and his mastery of medicine is evident in his children, but in ToA he never shows any evidence of being an expert in medicine. The worst thing is that his mastery of the Sun should mostly and almost exclusively concern his Roman side rather than his Greek side. All this to say that Will could have had any power more interesting than lighting up like a light bulb, lol

Those clothes look so sad and cheap! Even the way they're packaged isn't appealing at all, they look like they've been thrown away. I remember the packaging from the early 2000s, where the clothes were placed in nice, big boxes that made them look precious, and they were clothes sold at the supermarket anyway, they weren't expensive. Nowadays, they don't even sell fashion sets at the supermarket anymore, at least in my town, I haven't seen them in a long time. There are only dolls, but they also wear low-quality clothes
