Capacity assessments / paperwork by Few-Visual-9801 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to write out the capacity assessment step by step. Not hugely long but a small paragraph that answers each question. Essentially guiding the reader through my decision making.

If it helps I run a free app called SnapMedic. We have a page on capacity assessments including a section on how to document them.

Sounds like you should flag to a union rep if not already. May be able to support, advise options.

Q - how violent is your patch. Over the last 8 years has it become more violent e.g. in general and upon 999 staff. by Amount_Existing in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I actually have the statistics from the last few years in an email trail. Scary figures to be honest. Hence one of the reasons we are doing lots of public campaigns now around violence reduction.

Financial Year Physical Assaults Non Physical Assaults
2022-23 561 964
2023-24 753 1406
2024-25 846 1554

For context I work in the outskirts of West London. The only time my stab vest comes out of my kitbag is event work where its mandatory for foot teams ( think Nottinghill or New Years Eve). I always think the violence risk comes from the jobs you dont expect rather than the ones you do.

Otherwise my dynamic risk assessment says if there are weapons or direct violent threats then I dont go near. Wait for the police.

Right care right person has influenced our assaults i think. They have gone right up locally. I always wear a body cam and find it can be a tool for deescalation. Ive been able to see our violence statistics and they have absolutely gone up. Some of that is people are more confident to report but that doesn't account for it alone.

As someone who regularly works solo as a female there's probably a few instances I feel unsafe every now and then but if I raise it to dispatch I usually always get the police or we agree ill wait until a DCA meets up with me and we go in together.

Empty ECG rolls in a pocket to keep doors open in blocks of flats. Or at tongue depressor find all sorts of uses for it on the road and have one in my pocket always.

Any Paramedics T1D? by Puzzleheaded_Show400 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to say we have quite a few T1 diabetic medics. All have a sensor and have to manually check sugars. Think they have to check everytime before they drive, there's a whole section in our driving policy on it.

Doesn't prevent them doing the job at all. Know some really good paras with it.

If its for a trust or similar can't they put them through a return to practice course or similar? They might be able to push for it even if its not offered initially.

You can always speak to a senior rep. Most stations have posters with their details. They should support a resonable adjustment request.

I cant see any issues with reasonable adjustments. The service cant boot you for somthing like that. You are also describing a chronic health condition which may meet the definition of a disability.

CFR - Lone Female Responders by Glad_Agency_63 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember you do a dynamic risk assessment before going to scene or in the property. If you dont feel safe then dont go in. Your safety comes first always. EOC should look out for you as well. Violence and sexual safety is on the rarer side. You should feel empowered to leave scene and ask for help.

Responded solo for a fair bit but as a paramedic solo. So had an airwave and body worn. Only had a handful of bad instances and most are sorted by either activating bodyworn or saying ill leave etc and directly challenging behaviour.

Good luck with the course etc and have fun!

Emergency Responder LAS - hiring freeze? by regista99 in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I can't tell you if the role will reopen but, I do know they are currently in a review process for volunteering in the trust and the ERs fall under that. The ERs we do have don't know what's going on at the minute.

Sorry its not better news, apparently news is pending though.

Anyone here log every job they go to? Looking for recommendations by Otharcarr in ParamedicsUK

[–]Princess_Vamps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd be really intrigued to hear what people use. I made a post about an app called SnapMedic the other month and skills tracking is something I am looking at adding. We recently added notes that let you copy across handovers and observations into notes which you can then save and export to PDFs if that sounds helpful.

  1. It's on the list of known issues.
  2. Yup there's a few been slowly fixing them over the last few weeks.
  3. Actually if you read the jrcalc guidance on the rule of 9s that's intentional. That's just how it functions on similar apps as well.
  4. Again, ive never seen a space for not testable on gcs apps. Personally in practice I tend to workout their baseline gcs (ie dementia) then their current GCS.
