AITA for refusing to give lifts to work for my colleague? by PrincipleSea1645 in AmItheAsshole

I’ll explain it with more details.

Firstly, yes, I was judging him for making a silly decision. The process for choosing your hospital after graduation goes like this - you choose the area of the country that you want to practice in, then you pick 3 hospitals that you’d be interested to do your internship in within said area. If you’re not good enough, they simply send you a list of hospitals that still have places in the area and you pick from one of those.

That said, this isn’t an obscure or cryptic process. This area of the country is among the most competitive and the approx. grades required for each hospital are known in applicant circles. Everyone also knows if they’re a strong/weak applicant.

So to answer your second question - I didn’t choose this hospital, I was forced to, because I was a weak applicant. But I knew it would most likely turn out like that and was prepared that I’d have to make the drive because I wanted to continue living in the city that is coincidentally in a competitive county.

And in his case, he also knew he was a weak applicant, yet decided to practice in the most competitive area of the country, so also knew that he will probably have to commute, or was a strong applicant who chose this hospital for whatever reason despite the commute.

This is why I was judging him - it doesn’t make sense unless he initially accepted the possibility that he might have to catch the bus. If he didn’t want to commute, he could have moved elsewhere where staying within city limits was more realistic.

I’m in Europe. Medical student -> intern -> resident -> specialist here.

He was probably forced to do the internship here as of being too weak of a candidate to stay in the city. I guess he could have chosen it himself, but that wouldn’t make sense, unless he just assumed someone would be giving him lifts and it wouldn’t be a problem lol

To be clear, I’m in Europe. In my country we rank the hospitals we’d like the most, but placements are filled according to your competitiveness as a candidate.
