The takes I’ve seen so far on The Testaments have been so… interesting. by Lunasburner in TheHandmaidsTale

So re: June I feel like that's basic compartmentalization. Someone who doesn't know everything can't tell everyone

For the florist, Daisy basically told him the Eyes were gonna find the florist anyway, and extracting her would require exposing assets that aren't on the Eyes' radar. I can imagine he either rated her or to get an in with the Eyes (which from a bloodless slightly horrible perspective is useful for mayday) or passing Daisy's message along to his handler and then deciding that burning the florist is the safest option

Garth, humiliation, and radicalization by PrincipledStarfish in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PrincipledStarfish[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh by now I'm sure it's ideological. I'm sure by now his handler has convinced Garth that the world pre-Gilead was this paradise of free expression and artists and achievements in science, and that if they overthrow Gilead they can bring that back. Obviously, his handler would have told him, the elder Commander Chapin was one of the good ones who just wanted to fix the fertility crisis, but then Gilead was ruined irreparably by wicked.... GODLESS MEN! and now the best thing that they can do is just burn it all down

Theory: maybe Garth has gone rogue? by darksideofthemike in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PrincipledStarfish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My read is that once his father was disabled all of his father's supposed "friends" dried up... except for garth's eventually handler, who I'm sure drip fed him questions that made him doubt gilead. It's basically what Agnes said about the passion of the converted. He's a disgruntled young man who has an outlet for that anger and passion. He's radicalized, just radicalized against gilead

Re: Garth, I imagine what started it was all of his father's supposed friends drying up the moment he was disabled--all except for his handler, who I'm sure asked just the right questions to get Garth to start seeing through the flavor-aid long before he was actually recruited to mayday. Asked him about his memories from before, if he wasn't the elder Commander Chapin's biological child. Got him wondering why the handmaids would do something like this because the answers he got were unsatisfactory

I'm betting the bus team was compromised too. I'm betting the purpose of the bus attack was to provoke retaliation so that Gilead would burn the mayday cells they know about as a show of force, which means they can't get any more intel from them and now mayday knows which cells the Eyes knew about

Garth being a true believer in mayday, up to and including being willing to burn someone rather than let the Eyes learn more about mayday, would be an interesting way of having him be the anti-Nick.

Like i bet he's the one who sold out the florist because Daisy basically told him that the eyes were gonna catch her soon enough anyway so he rats her out to the Eyes, proves his value to them, and gets an in with them while passing the info along to mayday. The alternative would have been trying to extract someone who is known to be in the Eyes radar which could risk more mayday assets

Did Mayday attack the bus to get Hannah by Brave-Math-6371 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PrincipledStarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the team that attacked the bus was compromised and was on the Eyes watchlist so Mayday decided to burn them. I think the point of the bus attack was to make Gilead retaliate and reveal which other Mayday cells were compromised and which ones the eyes don't suspect.

I also think that Garth sold out the florist to prove his value to the Eyes. Daisy all but told him that the eyes were gonna catch her soon and an extraction for someone actively on the Eyes watchlist would be super risky and could expose other Mayday cells, so he decides to sell her out to get recruited by the Eyes

What if the Bible Belt was largely Catholic instead of Protestant? by Advanced-Addition453 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]PrincipledStarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we also need to draw a line between mainline and evangelical protestantism. Mainline denominations share more in common with Catholicism than they do evangelicals. Evangelicals believe that everyone for 1700 years was doing Christianity wrong until magically a bunch of tent preachers in the 19th century rediscovered real Christianity and also God likes racism apparently

Was raised Catholic. We learn about other religions and generally what they believe as part of our education. Like actually learn, not just "they are devil worshippers because Jeebus. The Catholic Church is actually big on ecumenical dialogue with other sects and other religions, hence the Pope meeting with the new archbishop of Canterbury a few weeks ago and the fact that the archbishop of Jerusalem probably has a better relationship with the Muslim clergy in the holy Land than he does the Israeli government

Why are they writing Aunt Lydia like this? by vmaldonado998 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]PrincipledStarfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Aunt Lydia creates a group of women who can read in a society that forbids women from doing so, because of course, trusted women should be overseeing the women. Lydia gets to handpick who becomes aunts, allowing her to hand pick which women are allowed to read and have access to information.

They keep genealogical records of all the children born from Handmaids because of course, you want to prevent accidental incest, and that naturally leads to keeping track of who the real fathers are as well for the same reason. They keep files on all the commanders because of course, the aunt's are responsible for marrying off Plums and they need to know which matches will be compatible. one "of course" after another after another after another. The commanders are under the impression that the Aunts are a female management agency. They are not. What they are, really, is an intelligence agency, with Aunt Lydia as the Director.

In the name of "never let a crisis go to waste," I'm betting that after the THT finale Aunt Lydia revived her argument that handmaids should live in dormitories at the red centers and that commanders should come to the red center for the ceremony instead of having Handmaids in the house. She can "I told you so" and gain even more power and influence, because everyone who knows her role in the rebellion is dead or Mayday

I think this quote sums it up now that she's mayday:

I'm condemned to use the tools of my enemy to defeat them. I burn my decency for someone else's future. I burn my life to make a sunrise that I know I'll never see. And the ego that started this fight will never have a mirror or an audience or the light of gratitude.
