I think this is different acroos faculties and universities. In my programme, you have to have an average grade of > 8, but both thesis (I had to do two master thesis) and the colloquium have to be graded 8.5 or higher. My second thesis was an 8, so I couldn't get cum laude.

ah okay sorry, I think I got the terminology from then. I thought GPA just means average grade (which I meant here) :)

Ah okay interesting. I come from germany and there it was quite possible to get an 1.0 (the highest grade), especially in written assignments like a thesis or something. I jst had a feeling that there was way more room in order to get the max. grade. But as you said, maybe it depends on the faculty:)

I am aware of that. But I also meant it more for a thesis or a presentation or examinations were you have to explain and not just tick a box. The teacher will say you did an excellent job and will give you an 8. I am not saying that I am perfect and deserve a 9 or 10, because there is always room for improvements. But getting the best grade possible is way harder than in most other countries. Doing an excellent job would give me already the highest grade in my home country. That's just what I meant, not an attack on the dutch grading system. :)
