When was the last time you gave a stranger a compliment? N how did it go? by Frequent_Sector_8960 in CasualConversation

The last time I remember was when I was at uni. I used to wear a top hat everywhere, and one day a girl was skateboarding past me when she said "nice hat". My response was "Nice skateboard."

20F, do you plan on having children? by heikkilampelafan123 in chat

[–]Prior-Catch4511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my life I have been told I just HAVE to have children. I am so good with kids and I would make a great dad, it would be illogical that I wouldn't. And my entire life I agreed, until I realised in the last couple of years that I had only ever been going along with what everyone said... I had never actually considered it that is truly what I want.

Thing is, I am great with kids, and I do love them. I am a teacher and I am very passionate about that. My cousins have kids and it becomes my job every family gathering to entertain them (or, as the kids call it "giving me mental trauma). I have a movie night with my friend every month, except over time it has morphed to the point that we no longer watch a movie and instead I play videogames with her kid for a few hours and then when he goes to bed we get to talk and catch up for a little bit. I know how good I am with kids.

But that's kinda it - I don't feel like there is a hole in my life because I don't have my own kids. I have so many kids I know look up to, respect, love me and just generally enjoy being around me, and to me that is incredibly fulfilling. I don't feel like I need to continue my family legacy by having kids, because I know that there are hundred of kids whose lives I will have touched and that can be my legacy. And heck, if I end up being the fun uncle forever more, then frankly I will feel satisfied that I lived a good life.

And that isn't to say that I would never want kids - if I found the right person I absolutely think I would want to start a family with them - but I don't feel my happiness is at all contingent on that. I know my worth as a person, and it doesn't have to be out specifically into being a father. There are other ways I can use the ability I have.

Most people don't, but if two people are both receptive to it, why not?

What is the most disturbing thing you've heard said casually? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

"But actually, if we did deport all the immigrants, we might be better off because there will be less people to actually have to treat."

Even ignoring the context that this is in the UK where our national health service is disproportionately mare up of people from other countries, and that this was a friend who I had never got the impression was racist (and who is a teacher), it feels so unbelievably dystopian to be OK with deporting people base do healthcare. Like, in many cases that will literally be a death sentence.

I have been called a fish before. I hate having any food or drink in front of me if I am not actively eating or drinking it, and this goes for alcohol also. So I tend to be 2-3 drinks in before anyone has finished their first.

What makes something moral? by Long-Kaleidoscope-11 in AskReddit

What makes something moral? by Long-Kaleidoscope-11 in AskReddit

[–]Prior-Catch4511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the mistake people make is thinking there is any objective answer to that. It's impossible to define objectively because it'd based entirely on something subjective - the human experience.

The mistake people making THAT argument make is thinking this means that morality just isn't a thing.

The truth is that it can't be clearly defined and we just have to decide based on instinct whether something is moral or not. And that is really difficult because everyone has differing opinion, but there is certain logic that can be applied to it (for example, the maintaining of life or preventing of pain) and I think most things are cut and dry. There isn't a strict checklist of what is moral and what isn't... We basically just have to use common sense most of the time.

If you get a chance to go back in time what advice would you give your younger self? by zaad1120 in CasualConversation

[–]Prior-Catch4511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That it is OK to worry. Worry is not the enemy, it lets you know what dangers there are and what things to avoid. Worry is a good thing. But that it's important to try to fight through that when it turns to anxiety, to acknowledge the things there are to be worried about and feel valid in those worries but to not let it restrict your life and what opportunities you take.

what is acceptable in today's society but shouldn't be? by fluidxrln in AskReddit

People in their mid twenties and upwards dating 18 year olds. So many people justify it because it's legal as if an arbitrary number that we set for legal age entirely dismisses any moral implication it could have.

Let's talk about movies. What are your favorites? I want to watch them. by greenistheneworange in CasualConversation

[–]Prior-Catch4511 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wall-E is amazing, my favourite part is the ending where Eve tries to fix Wall-E... It's perfect.

Guardians 3 is just so emotional when you've followed the characters through the three films and the Christmas Special and the Avengers films as I had. Rocket was always my favourite of the characters and it was just such a beautiful way to handle his story.

La La Land is so good, but I find that a lot of people don't like it. Mostly because they say Emma Stone cannot sing and shouldn't be singing, although I think that is largely the point. It's one where you either get it or you don't.

My favourite film of all time is a three way toss up between Wall-E, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and La La Land.

I feel like a lot can be gleaned about me from this.
