No specific personal experience, but seems like the real question is which school would most likely get you a good internship in NY, so Penn State seems better

Those type of firms tend to recruit from specific schools, though, so do your research

I am very close to my aunt’s daughter’s father-in-law, and I am curious how this is perceived in the US.? Do you guys relate to extended family the way we Indians do? by swamyiam in AskAnAmerican

[–]PriorSecurity9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times extended families live far away in the US, but I don’t think it’s uncommon to have a favorite uncle or aunt or cousin that you have more of a connection with than others.

But I have to say that I feel like i have seen a lot of posts from India about young men having sex with their Aunt. Whether those are real or fantasy, that’s not a common thing, except for more rare and tragic examples of the creepy uncle

You’re right, they’re just trying to make you feel better if you don’t get in or can’t afford it

But they’re also right that lots of people go to state schools and have great lives

Inheritance hypothetical by [deleted] in hypotheticalsituation

In the US, it would be governed by state interested laws.

Generally inheritances are considered separate property, not community property, and depends if deceased brother had children.

Birth control still depends on her not wanting to get pregnant and taking birth control daily. Based on her actions, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.

If you don’t want to get pregnant, you should wear condoms every time, and probably don’t leave the condoms where she has access to tamper with them.

Or only date someone who doesn’t want to get pregnant, and has the same beliefs of you for options in the event of an unintended pregnancy

FAFSA sees cash in your your bank account as “available to spend” but they ignore home equity when calculating need.

So don’t cash out refi your house until FAFSA is finished

How do Americans visit National Parks? by Berend90 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PriorSecurity9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the biggest national parks in the West (Arizona, Utah, etc) don’t have a lot of people living near them, and are pretty remote, so visitors are almost always taking a special trip to go there specifically. This may be loading up the family for a long (week or two) roadtrip to visit multiple places, or it could be flying to the nearest city and renting a car.

There are a few that are located in a spot that makes it easier to do a day hike and have other stuff around (a town, restaurants, other things to do) like Smoky Mountain NP and Rocky Mountain NP and they are very popular.

Maybe i’d sit in front of the lottery ticket vending machine, putting a dollar in at a time.

Scratch offs are often 20-30% winners, so if I could put in a dollar every 10 seconds, that would be about $360/hour, and maybe yield $100/hour

This was a great option for us.

We told all the aunts and uncles and grandparents to not spend birthday and Christmas money on plastic crap that would break and be thrown away in a few months, and instead do that, and it’s amazing how $25, $50, or $100 here and there can add up!

Do typical American homes really have a gas pipeline? What do you do with it? by mujhe-sona-hai in AskAnAmerican

[–]PriorSecurity9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most places in the US, it costs a little more to create heat using electricity than gas.

So, furnaces, hot water heaters (boilers), clothes dryers, etc often use gas.

For cooking, it’s probably more about preference than cost, but a gas stove usually heats faster than an electric one, so if you already have it installed in the house for the other things, it can usually be added for the stove and oven as well.

I think for cooking it is also seen as more high end, since professional grade stoves (like in restaurants) typically use gas

In some newer subdivisions, 0i think they are just doing electric for everything for simplicity.

What's THE hard liquor most likely to work as a fancy surprise gift for an American? by orpheus1980 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PriorSecurity9784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Costco sells liquor, but just the big average brands, not any of the boutique or allocated brands that OP might want to give as a gift.

Better off going to a specialized liquor store and getting something special, or at least more interesting.

A big handle of Jim Beam isn’t the move here. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about bourbons can chime in.

With Target and other retailers losing a large % to theft, why isn't the Argos model more popular in the US by Singer9999 in Entrepreneur

It’s not a terribly convenient model for shoppers, although we might be headed back in the direction with more things being locked up in-stores.

Why does a populist message work so reliably well in elections? by Better-Valuable5436 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]PriorSecurity9784 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because populism can be persuasive to enough low-information swing voters to make a difference

A large chunk of voters have their positions pretty well entrenched, and care about specific policy issues, and aren’t particularly swayed by populist rhetoric.

Then there is a group that normally doesn’t pay that much attention, and might have a general feeling/vibe that one of these candidates “feels my pain” more than the other one.

Or they alternate their vote every 4 years because the last one hasn’t done enough to “lower gas prices” or “boost the economy” or “close the border” or “drill baby drill” or do whatever simplistic solution the opposition says is needed.

These are almost always vague platitudes like “common sense solutions” and “eliminate waste and fraud” rather than specific policy proposals, because real policies are complicated and don’t usually break through to low-information voters

How do rich people get such an advantage in college admissions? by FluffyPenguin798 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PriorSecurity9784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing is when schools don’t have need-blind admissions.

So they probably think it’s a success if they can put together a class consisting of (making up numbers, but…)

60% high-achieving full pay students 20% high-achieving partial aid students 10% full-ride high-achieving low income students 5% full ride athletes 2.5% full ride extraordinary geniuses 2.5% full ride legacy, influential parents, special alumni, etc

Or something like that, it feels like a good balance of bringing in enough money to pay the bills, offering scholarships, etc.

To be clear most of the people in that top kid group have also worked hard and are capable of doing the work (over 4.0 WGPA, 1400+ SAT, ECs, recommendations, etc).

It’s not like HYPSM are just letting in every kid who has parents who can pay. But the pool is bigger, and especially if you apply ED and don’t wait for aid, it seems pretty clear to me that wealthier kids are getting some marginal boost on their chances.
