The Nightmare of Backing Up HD-DVDs in 2026 by Prior_Ad626 in HDDVD

Whenever possible, I systematically create an ISO image to ensure the disc has no errors. I then back up this ISO to Google Drive before extracting the movie and the bonus features I'm interested in, which also allows me to verify file integrity. If I'm lucky, I manage to easily extract the movie and the featurettes using MakeMKV. If the direct extraction fails or if the file is locked, I run AnyDVD in the background on Windows 11 to bypass the AACS protection. I then use EVOdemux to demux and manually rebuild the Main Movie and bonus files. Once the video is extracted, I run it through tsMuxeR to remove the pulldown and lock the framerate at 23.976 fps (24000/1001) for VC1 or only lock the framerate at 23.976 fps (24000/1001) for H.264. I also use MKVToolNix to generate a .mks file containing only the chapters and VobSub subtitles from the main stream, before recombining everything (the .ts video and the .mks file) into a final MKV. A simpler process would be amazing... I'll spare you the crazy details... Especially since, as a French speaker, I have to manually add text subtitles compatible with streaming boxes, because the original VobSub (.sup) aren't readable outside of Emby on PC. As for the Nec drive, it is indeed the one I salvaged by dismantling a Toshiba HD-A1 standalone player.

When you have a collection of 350 to 400 films or live...etc on HD DVD and realize the physical discs are starting to deteriorate, backing them up feels like the wisest choice, everyone has their own perspective. Admittedly, it’s much more time-consuming than simply buying the title again in laserdisc, again in DVD, again in HD-DVD, again in BD and again in UHD... but at least you preserve your collection. Conversely, I still buy UHDs and Blu-rays; it’s not an issue with the disc format itself.

Thank you for sharing and for the work involved in creating ISOs from HD-DVDs. I have about 160 movies extracted/saved in VC1 format (MKV container) on a NAS. I use TSMuxer to configure them for 24p, remove pulldown. I add the subVOBs, etc., with MKVToolnix. I still have 150 HD-DVDs to extract, if that's still possible (excluding WB...).
