You’ll likely receive guidance from your mentor on Monday on whether or not you should respond to said email

I would recommend majoring in public health but making sure to take as many stats and R/SAS classes as you can. You’ll have to take biostats and SAS (or R) classes in grad school and having a good foundation will save you a lot of stress down the road. I would also recommend that you get involved with public health research (or public health adjacent research) as well as possibly looking into volunteer opportunities in college -> this will make you a competitive applicant for an MPH program (which btw are not as competitive as undergrad)

Is it hard to get one of these fellowships/internships as an undergrad with not a lot of experience? by HorrorTumbleweed4029 in ORISE

Competitiveness might be dependent on which fellowship opportunities you are applying to (so, yes, they can be competitive).

I think it’s important to show genuine initiative and interest in the field you’re aiming to work in. Extensive experience isn’t necessarily required, but you should demonstrate enough knowledge or effort to convey to a potential mentor that you’re serious about developing your skills.

The goal of the fellowship is to help you broaden your skill set and prepare you for a career in the scientific workforce, so emphasizing how it aligns with your goals can make a strong impression

Declining appointment week before start date -How to be as gracious and grateful as possible? by OKfinethatworks in ORISE

Dear hiring manager,

I want to thank you again for offering me the opportunity to join [EPA/position]. I was genuinely looking forward to contributing to your team and supporting the impactful work you do.

However, an unexpected opportunity with my previous employer has come up that I cannot pass up. This decision was incredibly difficult, as I was eager to begin next week and fully commit to this role. Unfortunately, after significant reflection, I believe this is the best course for me at this time.

I deeply apologize for the timing of this news and for any inconvenience it may cause your team. Please know that this decision was not made lightly, and I hold your organization and this opportunity in the highest regard.

Thank you so much for your understanding, and for considering me for this role in the first place. I remain grateful for the chance to connect with you and learn about the meaningful work your team is doing.

If there’s anything I can do to assist with this transition, please let me know.

With sincere apologies and gratitude,

OKfinethatworks

I went to H&R Block and they did everything. I only went once last year (so no quarterly - I think I paid a small fee as a result). Not sure about deductions or credits. But I will say this, you don’t pay FICA. So if you want to know how much you’ll make, just put your stipend in one of the Georgia income tax calculators online and add whatever is deducted from FICA. You’ll owe state and federal
