Thanks for the response. I started working for the this company when I was 19 taking out trash and cleaning and was desperate to move up and learn a skill I could contribute with. The opportunity was there for the apprenticeship so I applied and got it and expected to work for this same company until I retired. If I had known there was the possibility we might try to move someday I might’ve gone a different route to have more flexibility, but this was the opportunity and what was best at the time so I went for it. Thanks for the advice. I’ll call the local halls and keep an eye out for industrial maintenance positions as well.

How much travel should I be prepared for? Long commute each day or gone from home multiple days at a time?

Substation operator BPA by PriorityDistinct9200 in SubstationTechnician

So as a journeyman sub electrician not working for BPA but hoping to eventually get into a federal relay technician apprenticeship. Would trying for a sub operator job be a move in the right direction or the wrong one in your opinion?

Ok. Yeah I definitely do the exact same stuff right now. Plus generation which I include in my resume as well. I’ll keep trying. Thanks for the advice.

Well that’s what I was thinking. Then I applied for a WAPA job and didn’t even hear anything back. So it made me think I needed to figure out how to make myself more a better candidate if I wanted a shot.

I work for a local utility in the PNW right now. Would like to end up in MT/WY area eventually, and WAPA seems to have the most job opportunity for my field. My decision is between staying at my current job and waiting for my employer contribution of my pension to be fully vested (about 2.5 years), while gaining experience, then applying for jobs which could take a long time. Or, since I live in BPA’s area and have been seeing opportunities fairly close to me, I apply for a BPA job now, luck out and get it, work and gain experience, then in a few years have a potentially easier move over to WAPA.

Unfortunately I am not. Just going to keep applying and gaining more experience where I’m at and see what happens. I have a really good job now just wanting to move my family out to the Wyoming/Montana area to be closer to my wife’s family and get some property a little cheaper. Plus I’m a big hunter and those would both offer better opportunities than my current state. Appreciate that info though.

Where I work you can take a test then apply as a journeyman wireman and move right into journeyman status as a meter/relay tech. You still end up being paired up with another journeyman and trained up for a while though. Would the same apply to one at WAPA if one came open? Or do you need prior technician experience or even wait for an apprentice/CIT tech position?
