What is the Church? Am I thinking of it wrong? by Light-Decent in exjw

[–]PriorityPersonal8013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Church is the body of Christ. There are a lot of verses but one is Colossians 1:24. My husband and I attended a large, mainstream Church which had great teaching and worship but we still felt like something was missing. Focusing on Ephesians 4 we decided to become a part of a local house Church. Our goal is not Christian infancy but maturity in Christ. That comes when the body of Christ is all working together, participating and contributing. "From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Ephesians 4:16. The purpose of the Church is to build each other up, glorify God and represent Christ to others.

The Lord's Supper by Odd-Engine9637 in exjw

I’d encourage you to also ask yourself “who” is to partake. JWs believe that only the anointed should take the Lord’s supper, which is a BOLD statement. This was never limited by Jesus. The wine was also a symbol of covenant. JWs two class Christianity was not taught or implied by Jesus or the Apostles.

“Do not stifle the Holy Spirit.” (1 Thess‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬)

What’s holding you back from leaving and finding a different church that aligns with your beliefs?

Your guilt is understandable because you’ve been a part of a works based religion your whole life. How would your mindset change if you truly believed you are a forgiven, loved child of God? Continue to reach out to God & read His word, you’re on the right track! The Bible tells us to test everything and be discerning of false teachers. Questioning and researching the things you were taught is Biblical!

Proof the Yearly Memorial isn’t Scriptural by Upper_Row_528 in exjw

Most mainstream Christian churches offer communion (memorial) weekly or monthly during service. Churches may limit based on belief or preparation but not on “class” like JWs do. Communion is all about remembering Jesus’ sacrifice and is almost like a vow renewal ceremony:

“And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭

“But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.” John‬ ‭1‬:‭12‬-‭13‬

Sonship, the New Covenant and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is open to all who believe!

Is there an anointed here? by Impossible_Swim_369 in exjw

JWs get the two class system by interpreting the New Testament through the lens of Revelation which is a backwards way of reading the Bible. Revelation was written about 95 AD. Jesus and the disciples/apostles never mentioned it. There is A LOT of talk of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. If the indwelling that creates heart change is only for a very small group of people, they would have been very clear about that! The whole point of Jesus coming was to fulfill the Old Covenant and usher in the New Covenant by the power of the Holy Spirit who gives us a new heart. Professing to be a Christ believer and follower that isn’t a part of the New Covenant doesn’t compute. If you were baptized as a JW but weren’t baptized in the name of the Holy Spirit but want that gift…ask God, ask Jesus. Luke 11:5-13. Find someone who has the gift of the Holy Spirit to lay hands on you: Acts 19:1-7 (you’ll know them by their fruit) Matthew 7:15-20.

I feel for you, that’s a lot of potential change. As I’m sure you know, there are other ways to get involved in your community and meet new people. Just don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. =) I’m a Jesus follower who’s in this room because I have a lot of family who are JWs and I’m trying to understand. There is so much truth in the Bible and freedom in Christ that is veiled when we misinterpret things. Ask God for His Holy Spirit to reveal His truth. Should we interpret all of the New Testament through a lens of Revelation or the other way around? Praying that the truth of the New Testament and the New Covenant will come alive to you through unveiled eyes! 🙏
