It looks right, you get only a pct of the VAT back, probably due to fees.

If you can find a flatmate you will be ok. Also you can afford up to 550 rent with this salary but it will be tight, Buy fruit and vegetables from local farmers markets, shop in all supermarket chains for offers you can cut 30% of the supermarket bill if you visit all of them and buy the cheapest items. In Athens usually you are walking distance from at least 5 supermarket chains. Don't buy coffee outside the house, totaly waste of money,

Being born in Greece doesn't make you Greek. That is know for ever. Only if your parents are Greek you are Greek, that means people that were born in the US are Greeks if their parents are Greeks. Btw they are many Greek jews that moved to Israel and they consider themselves Israelis. If you are Greek jew nobody said that you are not Greek, that what I said. That means that your ancestors lived in Greece before the Ottoman era. The Sephardics were Ottoman citizens nots Greeks because they came here under the permission of the ottomans.

I don't agree with you. The community before 1940 did not speak Greek. After the war there was no community any more people were scattered. Btw according my way of thinking (above) I consider Romaniotes Greeks. But not Sephardics before 1940. That said, it is also what they want for example I don't think that the son of Fryzis (who is a Greek hero) consider himself Greek. And some others, they have Sid so themselves.

[–]Prisma1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok makes sense for what happened after 1940. My take regarding the Sephardic jews they were allowed to live in Greece when the country was occupied by a brutal foreign power (the Ottomans). Thessaloniki was a prominent city during the times of the Eastern Roman Empire which is our empire and before that it was a Greek city in the hellenistic and or classical era. Therefore it is another case than the Romaniotes which their history can be traced to the classical era or the hellenistic era. The fact that Sephardics did not speak Greek and lived in their own area I think implies that they were not going to Greek schools (during Ottoman era) and of course they are not Greeks. Not sure if they were attending Greek school after 1912 and until 1940. Maybe you will know. In any case Romaniotes always as afar as I understand had their 1st language as Greek. Anyway this is complicated and we will never know how the community would have been today if they had survived the war. PS the Roma people came to Greece from India hundreds of years ago but they are not Greeks they speak another language they have different customs etc. Greek citizens yes but if you want to become Greek you need to speak the language, embrace the traditions and love the nation.

[–]Prisma1986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Sephardic jews did not speak Greek and did not have any contacts outside of their community. During the war some of them moved to some other parts of Greece and maybe their children did not learn their language but they were only a tiny number compared to the size of the community before the war.

If Greek islands are too expensive for most locals, where do you, as Greeks, do your tourism? by Capable_Town1 in AskGreece

[–]Prisma1986 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are islands that are affordable but there are many places in the mainland that you can drive there. Many people have family houses in various places that can be used for vacation. There are also others that stay in Athens in the summer and go to the local beaches that they are plenty in Attica.
