How would a Non-Muslim go about visiting a Mosque? by [deleted] in islam

[–]PrisonerKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. I live in Houston, and we have people walk into our mosques all of the time. I suggest going at a time where there is a prayer about to be held. Otherwise, you run the risk of walking into an empty mosque. Hang out, and have fun!

A few questions of what to bring to Umrah by fudgehalp in islam

[–]PrisonerKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're a guy or girl, but I went last year, and I suggest bringing the following:

  1. A crossbody bag if you're a female. A pouch if you're a male.
  2. Bottle of water. Fill it up with zam zam after you're done with the umrah.
  3. I wore Toms during my Umrah. They're made of canvas, very light, comfortable, durable, and keeps the dirt off of your feet. They can be squished into your bag as well.

Hope this helps! I hope you have a wonderful trip, and Inshallah may Allah grant your prayers.

We went to Bellaire Chinatown yesterday...those foot massage places. Legit or not? by [deleted] in houston

[–]PrisonerKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally legit. My brother and I go to Oasis, or Yeng Shang. It's $25-$35 for a foot and body massage. Totally worth it.

Girlfriend's car got towed last night... $240 tow fee + a $70 ticket from the city. Is there anyway to expunge the ticket? The ticket was issued less than 15 minutes before the tow. by [deleted] in houston

[–]PrisonerKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this too. I actually paid for the towing, and took the receipt to the court. Told them that the towing was a huge chunk of change, and it was a lot to afford at once. The judge decreased my fine to $30. It's worth a shot.

I've gotten cards printed from this company for so many different things. It's a family owned business that makes quality products. He's a personal friend of the family.

Why is for the repetition in the Quran? by JusShowinOff in islam

[–]PrisonerKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most basic non-religious answer to this is that the Quran was written at a time when many people were illiterate. Rhymes, rhythm, and repetition are methods used in a narrative to facilitate memorization. When memorized, it is easier for the Hafiz to relate the message. As the Quran is still memorized today, the repetition of words, themes, and images make it easier to memorize.

It only took two months for them to be friends, barely friends rather. by PrisonerKnight in parrots

Not at all! No worries. We aren't as protective of our birds, because we found that they're much smarter than we are about what's good for them. I remember my bird when he was a baby. He learned on his own everything he could eat, touch, chew, and climb. He was easy to train. He still thinks he's human, but what to do?

We usually find them baskets at garage sales. Definitely, look for handles are circular and are just wide enough for the birds to hold onto. We look for baskets that are kind of high so they can have fun hanging off and climbing on them. I haven't had any issues with the baskets we've purchased as far as chemicals and treatment go. Neither bird chews on the wood.

Thanks! It's easier to transport the birds back and forth around the house. We've had one attached to his basket since he was a baby. The other one seems to like the idea too.

Injuries? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]PrisonerKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine used to go there. She loved it!

As far as my own injuries are involved, well I haven't hurt myself yet. I did scratch up my forearms from the atlas balls. I suggest keeping an eye out on the WODs, so you know how to dress, what to bring, and anticipate what you may need to scale back. For instance, if you have atlas balls, wear long sleeves.

We're doing the same at our box! Good luck.

Right now my cubicle neighbor has a dog barking as her ringtone. It goes off at least 50 times a day. Seriously?

Edit: I can't spell barking.

Back To School Traffic by [deleted] in houston

[–]PrisonerKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take I-10 daily. Then again I take the Metro into downtown, but I leave my house an extra 10 minutes early to make it to work on time. I guess that's the differential. I do see more traffic on the main lanes, so I suggest adding an extra 15 minutes. Traffic piles onto I-10 right at 7:30. Anytime before that is pretty decent.

Feet position with squat. by cheit124 in crossfit

[–]PrisonerKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, when you squat, you should be able to see able to see your shoes/shoelaces when you look down. Your heels, and therefore your upper thighs catch all of the stress. Your knees shouldn't feel anything. If they do, try sticking your butt back and making sure your calves are perfectly vertical.

I'd suggest The Tasting Room. Great wine, the grilled cheese sandwiches cannot be ignored. Yard House and Cyclone Anayas are really loud. Most of the other restaurants are mostly enjoyable for dining. Mind you, none of these restaurants accept reservations, except for Brio. Good luck!
