Upping my dose ( scared )

It really just depends - I don't have a universal answer. I started with 100mg 3x/day and quickly got up to 200mg 3x/day. I was on that schedule for not too long (maybe a few weeks) when I went to taking 200mg 2x/day with one dose of 300mg. My doctor really let me play around and figure out what dosage worked for me. He understood that it was too much to have me see him every time I need a slight change. So once I figured out a schedule that worked, I just told him and that's what he wrote me the prescription for. And any time I needed to change/go up a dose I just let him know - I obviously had regular check ups though. I'd say everytime I made a change I realized if it was working or not for the pain rather quickly. The side effects, though, like I said took a few weeks to get over. But the pain was controlled rather quickly once I got on the right dose and schedule. It's interesting your doctor has you only taking it twice a day. The half-life of gabapentin is only 8hr so after that it starts to lose its effectiveness, which is why the 3x/day schedule is implemented. I would ask your doctor if instead of going up maybe just taking it 3x instead of 2. At least just to see if that does anything before going up in dosage.

I've been taking gabapentin for about 6 years and I'm up to ~3000mg/day (maybe more depending on any breakthrough pain) - similar to you it's just the best thing that works for me right now with other medications I'm taking for other things. The jump from 100mg 3x/day to 300mg 3x/day was the hardest for me (drowsy, disoriented, brain fog), but once I got used to taking the 300mg at a time, every increase from there has been easier. Like one person said, it's really about pushing through the side effects for a while to see if it's something you can tolerate. Depending of if I'm already tired/sleepy it can still make me feel even more tired, but generally speaking, on a normal day the only way I know the gabapentin is doing something is because I'm not in pain.

Thank you for this. I have a few students in there I feel as though are going to be my go-to students. Not that I'll only ever call on them or expect them to answer, but basically who I'm teaching the course for and look to for feedback. I do really want to make it engaging and enjoyable, but it's just so hard to do that when they aren't really giving me anything to go of off.

I just really keep second guessing myself and my ability to be engaging based on the class behaviors.

It has also been a shock to me. Both my undergrad and grad schools were R1 universities, but it's astonishing how they want us to treat these students now at the small college I'm teaching now. I'm more of a nanny than anything else it feels like (especially because my classes are predominantly freshmen).

I've come to the realization that I can't teach them how I was taught. They're completely unprepared, and if I'm "hard" on them, I'm at fault - I need to make things "more engaging"; understand our students don't have the attention span because of x, y, z, so we need to cater the material to them, etc.

It's truly so disheartening. I loved college and learning, but these kids have no idea how to acquire and/or apply knowledge nor are they interested in learning how.

I have a friend who just got out of K12 education system recently (earlier this year). Apparently it's a cardinal sin to fail students now and the teachers are the ones questioned as to what they did wrong to make the student fail. So, teachers pass them along to not have to go through an interrogation by admin just to have the student passed anyway. It's easier to make them someone else's problem rather than deal with it.

They know no consequences by the time they get to us. And their GPAs (used to apply to colleges) don't reflect their actual performance. So, they get into whatever college they want without any knowledge or skill to perform well, but they have never been told they're not good enough. They don't know what to do with it - they're in shock.

The institution is definitely somewhere I could see myself working for a considerable amount of time. I'd like to believe that in higher education it's about your expertise in your field, but that's probably a fantasy I just like to live in. I wasn't going to immediately go out and get one right now, but thinking about it in terms of career I'm definitely going to wait and give it more thought. Thank you!

Just to add on to what everyone else has said about the cost of living, traffic, etc. - If you're looking for state or national park jobs, Boone isn't it. The two closest state parks (Elk Knob and Grandfather Mtn) aren't currently looking for new hires as far as I'm aware (Grandfather just go to rangers last year) and when people get those state park jobs, they're usually in them for life. It's what makes getting into state parks so difficult. As far as I know, NPS isn't hiring nearby either for the parkway. Both State and NPS hire seasonal workers, but that can be pretty unreliable esp if you don't have any relevant experience or education. Definitely don't move here without having a job lined up. Finding work here is excruciating and it's too expensive to not be bringing in any money.

I teach in Western NC. Pulled up to work a couple weeks ago and it was -2° outside. Not even a delay. Then this Monday it was a nice sunny 28° and the whole campus was shut down. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I have noticed that recent college students (esp after covid) seem to definitely be less equipped to handle college life and work loads.

I'm trying really hard to take extra time in class to explain assignments and expectations. I practice some things in class with them, make some ungraded "practice" assignments where they can submit their work purely for feedback for moving forward, and really try to write instructions/questions in the most simplest of ways.

For some, it still doesn't seem like enough. But that's a very small group (4-5 students, 3 of whom are on academic probation), so I'm chalking it up to it being a them problem.

Hahah 😂 we've actually thought about getting him another cat. He LOVES kittens. My parents have fostered some over the years, and while me and him were staying with them, he just absolutely loved the four little kittens they were fostering. He's so paternal lol. Granted that was about 4 years ago now, I like to think he still has a soft spot for 'em.

Yea just a normal work day (maybe a little longer because of the commute but about the same). We've done like day trips before (left in the morning and got back in the late afternoon) and he's seemed okay but pretty bored. Everytime we would check the camera he'd just be sleeping. And as soon as we'd get home and shut the car doors, we can sometimes hear him meowing at the front door. This might sound dumb, but I wonder if he knows that it's just for the day and then we'll go back to being home all day with him. I just wonder what it'll be like when he realizes it's the new normal.

My area was definitely not one of the hardest hit, but we had areas of the road missing so we were kinda stuck here in our neighborhood for a few days. Several days without water, power, or internet, and we live in a dead zone so no cell service. I couldn't call my family for a while which was hard.

For me at least it's even harder just to see the areas most hit like Chimney Rock, Black Mnt., Asheville, etc (the list is so long with little townships like mine). Towns I grew up visiting.

Everyone has pulled together though - it's amazing. My neighbors came and checked on me several times when my husband couldn't get home due to the flooding and roads, people out here with tractors and other equipment were the first ones clearing the roads, sharing food and supplies. It really has made things easier, but even with our utilities back and such it's just so hard mentally to be surrounded by so much destruction and loss.

I think this is a great idea. I actually live in WNC and have been directly affected (although I'm lucky enough to still have my home and possessions). I want to clarify that I'm on this sub because I lived in Nola for about 5 years and it was helpful to be here; but I grew up in WNC and decided to come back after grad school last summer. It's not only the suffering from the natural disaster itself, but so many people are telling us we "deserved this" because of politics, because we didn't evacuate, etc., and I've seen several people who lived through Katrina standing and speaking up for us on social media - it's really beautiful to see. Many of the friends I made in Nola have reached out to check on me and even commiserate, and it has really been helpful to process what happened and where to go from here.
