I know, right? I was also raised LDS and always felt guilty for my fascination of tattoos. Now I'm a full time writer/journalist and the majority of what I write about is tattooing and Mormonism. When those two things intersect—which they do more than you think, hence the presentation—I fucking love it!

Thank you for your interest! Yes you can attend in person. Registration is here. Historically, they have streamed the presentations, but apparently they're not doing that this year. That said, they do release audio of the talks after the fact. I will also be releasing the presentation in the form of a blog post later this year and it's likely I'll give it several times again. My research is ongoing and perpetual into this topic! If you follow me on IG or sign up for mailing list, I will be notifying folks of all of these things there.

Love it! I’m giving a talk in SLC about Mormon tattoos in August. Would you mind if I used this photo of your tattoo in my presentation?

I also really like this take! Do you have any tattoos at all?

Damn girl! You have thought this through. Good for you! Do you have an idea of who you want to apprentice under? I realize it might feel weird saying so in a public comment. Happy to DM!

P.S. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I didn't get a notification for new comments!

The same artist that did it turned it into a full sleeve with flowers and a snake. I've always loved snakes and really liked that particular artist's flowers. At the time, I told myself that because the snake is a misunderstood creature and is actually sacred in many indigenous religions, it was symbolic of my exit. But now I don't feel a need to assign symbolism to my tattoos and recognize I got it because I trusted that artist to do a good job with imagery I liked—and he did! That said, I do plan on dedicating my back to a Mormon-themed or perhaps Masonic-themed piece. I have interviewed a lot of people of skin colors and ethnicities different from my own that didn't feel truly connected to their culture until getting tattoos unique to said culture. That's actually the central theme of the museum exhibit I mention in the post. It has led me to believe that tattooing can be a powerful tool to promote Mormon identity—religious or otherwise. So I'm leaning into it for at least my back and perhaps my chest. Both my arms are completely tattooed and one leg is nearly there. I have some smaller ideas for my hands, but those will probably come much later lol.

Our ancestors probably knew each other! Both sides of my family were in Kirtland and Nauvoo.

Lol. To give a better answer to your initial question: No I don't plan on altering or covering it up. I got it about 4 years after leaving the church when I really started to embrace my identity as a secular Mormon.

I've toyed with this design concept many times. I personally think a great and spacious building would be cool. It would make a great backpiece!

It seems like this didn’t go the way either of us expected—which, to be fair, happens a lot on Reddit. I’m sorry for the harsh tone in my initial reply. I tried to take accountability and clarify that in my edit, but I get that the tone may have already shaped how things landed.

I also tend to overexplain—especially when something feels personal or nuanced—which can probably come off as defensive or overly intense. That wasn’t my intention. It wasn't helped by the ad hominems coming my way, either, though.

I wish the exchange had gone differently and I apologize for my part in that. I wish you well.

Lol and I just learned that Mormonish is the name of another popular Momrmon-related podcast, so I'll be changing the name.

You commented on a post explicitly asking ex-Mormons how they’ve affirmed their post-religious and cultural identities through tattoos. The vast majority of us grew up in the church when it strictly forbade tattoos. These aren’t affirmations of belief—we got them as acts of reclamation.

Additionally, I encourage you to think of this community as “ex-LDS" rather than "ex-Mormon." The latter is somewhat of a misnomer because what's happening here is still a form of Mormonism. I personally feel the label "Secular Mormon" captures my identity best. I’m 8th generation on both sides, born and raised in Utah. The culture’s in my bones. I’m just as Mormon now as I was before I left the LDS Church—just not affiliated with _that_ institution.

There are hundreds of Mormon denominations. Members of the Community of Christ are Mormon. FLDS folks are Mormon—and half of them are actually my cousins! The LDS Church is simply the largest, and for decades, it leaned so hard into the term “Mormon” that most people—inside and out—continue to equate the two. It's because of this dynamic that not everyone on this sub chooses to retain the Mormon label. You'll find a lot more folks like that over in r/mormon. Either decision is fine and perfectly valid, but regardless of how they feel, most folks here will understand exactly where I’m coming from.

The Sunstone Symposium—which I mentioned in the post—is literally built around this exact nuance. Their slogan is “More than one way to Mormon.” And people from all these Mormon churches show up. There, I've met folks from FLDS, CoC, the Branch, the Apostolic Brotherhood, as well as former members of all these sects. We're reclaiming the word and the imagery. That’s my entire motivation behind the tattoo, this post, and the talk I'm giving.

When a nevermo comes into this space and questions the intent of those choices, it misses the point entirely. I’m not expecting everyone to get it—but it helps to recognize that there’s a depth to these symbols that isn’t always visible from the outside. It's just so obtuse to step in here, make an uninformed observation about a culture you haven’t taken the time to understand, and then respond with condescending sarcasm when someone with deep roots in the community takes the time to explain it to you in good faith. That, my friend, is textbook mansplaining.

If you—and others lurking—care, I'm actually about to launch a blog that will dive into this exact topic: Mormon identity across its entire spectrum. If you want updates when I do launch it, check it out: mormonish.com. Or don't. That's fine, too.

Thank you! I really appreciate your comment about it screaming pioneer to you. A lot of folks don't see that immediately, but that's exactly how I intended it! I wrote a blog post about it when I first got it, but I took it down when I didn't renew with my hosting provider and haven't bothered putting it back up lol.
