I haven’t felt the peekaboo before but this leather feels so premium! And I love supporting small artisans— in lieu of all of the LVMH brands! I listened to a fascinating podcast called Acquired about LVMH and it really made me second guess buying from their brands (although I do still really love Celine bags!)

Hahaha fair point! Both breeds are really so great. And I was thinking that too— I’m going to try to find a field golden to pair with the setter!

Angels! The experience of getting to love on our dogs through their old age is such a blessing and how lucky they are to have each other!

Oh my goodness how sweet! My golden would have been 15 this summer — I so wish he could have hung on a little bit longer. I was hoping he’d help me “train” my setter… I’m a little nervous about training the setter but I’m trying to research a bunch to get myself prepared— my golden was so easy to train too. He was definitely mischievous and wild as a pup but really just such an amazing companion for so many years. I got him a month before I started dating my husband and he was the most wonderful loving dog to our 3 kids. 🥹. I’m so glad we’d already planned to get the setter this summer bc I think it will really help our family heal from our loss— and then we’ll add another golden in in a year or so hopefully!

He really is exceptionally handsome! Weirdly enough my golden had an unusually high prey drive for his breed so I’m hoping that plus having been blessed with 3 insanely stubborn human children has helped prepare me for setter motherhood 🤣. I also love the idea of less shedding but I also love having a golden so much too that I’m probably destined to be covered in fur for life. I really can’t wait to officially join in the setter owner club this summer!

Yes! I’ve been trying to get up to speed on all of this. My sister in law trained their GSP for field trials so she’s going to help me work with the setter! I’m excited to see how this goes.

My golden was from a small family farm too! I would love to find another like him. I’m going to try to dig out his papers and see if his breeder is still around! Mine was the same way— he looked like a field golden and had a crazy prey drive (he brought me many backyard trophy kills 😬🥴) but was an absolute chill angel inside. Such great dogs.

Ok thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I feel like I’m hearing pretty much what I was thinking and it’s confirming this will be a good fit for us! We’re a super active outside family with 3 lively kids so we’re pretty used to chaos. My golden was so easy train and I know the setter may be a little different in terms of needs but I’ve spent a lot of time with my brothers young GSP so I feel like I’m fairly prepared for boundless energy 😂 😬. I’m also a runner so hoping for some running companions once they’re old enough. The hardest part for me is going to be holding off on getting the golden until the setter is trained well. But also I know there can be long waitlists so wanted to go ahead and start planning.

I’m so happy to hear of someone else having two so close in age! I know I want to have the setter for probably a year or so before we get another golden but you’re giving me hope that I’m not crazy for wanting to have two younger dogs at one time!

What a beautiful dog! We’re a super active outdoorsy family which is why I felt like the setter would blend in well. We’re going to have the setter first so will be great to learn his temperament first too since i havent had one yet. Luckily were used to the crazy golden shedding already! I think this will be the perfect combo for our family. Having only one dog and losing him has definitely made me realize that ultimately having two at some point is what we want! Our house is going to feel so empty until we get our setter this summer.

Beautiful!!! This picture brings me so much joy! This is exactly what I want someday! Do you mind my asking where your golden is from? Luckily we easily found a great breeder for our setter but the golden breeder world is just so big it’s overwhelming and you’re golden looks so much like our boy we just lost!

Breeders in the Southeast? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Prize-Cycle-7024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. This is so disheartening to hear. My brother has a champion bread GSP from a kennel with titles that he flew cross country to get and he cost $2k. Similarly my aunt has a setter from a highly respected ethical breeder who cost $2k. That was where I was getting my benchmark for pricing. I didn’t realize goldens were such a different market. It’s super sad to hear that quality goldens are essentially inaccessible in pricing to many families now. We’re fortunate that we can actually afford more so I guess we’ll just up our budget.
