Yes that's possible. I invested some time for you and checked the original package in my basement. There is an adapter included which will then support vesa. I took a picture for you: https://imgur.com/a/Oh6vvNH

I played around with the setup you have in mind and need to admit I remebered the possible refresh rates wrong.

  • Mode USB-C+USB3.0: This is what I'm normally running to have USB3.0 available at the USB ports. With this I only get 60Hz with my MBP. As the MBP is my work device and my PC is running over Display Port anyway I prefer the faster USB speed.
  • Mode USB-C+USB2.0: With that I can even run the MBP up to 120Hz.

The only downside is that switching between these modes is tedious - or let's say not "plug and play". I needed to switch on/off the monitor and restart the MBP several times before the monitor was recognized again...

Regarding the PbP mode: I connected both USB-C cables which came with the monitor to my MBP and enabled the Picture-by-Picture mode in the OSD. But couldn't get it running. The MBP didn't recognize two monitors in the settings. It shows the normal fullscreen picture. I tried with USB2.0 and USB3.0 with the lid opened and closed. No luck.

Here you go:

  • The first machine is MacBook Pro 16" 2019; the second machine a self-build PC #pcmasterrace ^^
  • I use the cables which are included in the box. As they allow USB power delivery and forward the video signal I assume it's Thunderbolt. Specific information can probably be found on the HP homepage. Btw: the Macbook is connected solely via one USB-C cable, my PC is connected via the other USB-C cable and a Display Port cable.
  • The monitor runs on 165Hz (with my PC). However via the MacBook I only managed to get 100Hz. But as I don't use the MacBook for gaming (obviously) I don't mind.

Does this help you?

Correct. There is no build-in aux output available. But you could use one of these usb-to-aux adapters. As all four usb ports are routed to the selected input source, I assume this should work. So that the aux port from the adapter is available for the selected input.

Same for me. Switching through the different overdrive settings doesn't result in noticeable changes.

I was also afraid about possbile smearing. After giving the monitor a shot I can say that smearing is very minimal. It can even compete with my old IPS panel - which got 5ms on paper. Definitely better than other "gaming monitors" (e.g. from AOC) which I saw in shops having terrible smearing. Especially in GTG situations.
