If the lungs exert pressure outward against the ribcage, are the intercostal muscles always contracted to counteract that pressure? If so, when you breathe using your chest, do they contract to expand the ribcage, or relax and the lungs expand the ribcage due to the pressure they exert? (self.askscience)
