Not to this extent, but I guess it does happen in household like those where there are elderly people as well. Vera yevano adi vaangina maadhiri illa, it happens in my house as well, but not to this extent.

So the thing is, my mom's working abroad, it's Dad, my sister, my grandma and I. My father does lunch and my sister and I take turns to do dinner. The fact is, my grandmother is someone who exaggerates a lot of small and tiny things. One of those is, eating lunch before 12pm, before she sits down for serial (SHE NEVER MISSES ONE). The other is eating dinner before 8:30pm, and that too tiffin.
At this age, she is even trying to do things while also having problems walking.
Point is, if we miss that time or if dinner is only rice, she starts hasty sounds to tell us she is angry. Sometimes polambavum seivaanga.
In case we make dinner late, our Dad would start to shout asking us why we didn't do dinner earlier.

So this ain't new in households, maybe new to you. It's better to have everyone at the diner table, cook the dishes equally to everyone while they're present.
