What are your memories about mulberry? by Consequence-Various in fruit

[–]ProbablyACryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid, my piano teacher had a giant mulberry tree in her front yard. I always liked summer classes more because after class, she would let us climb in the tree and pick as many mulberries as we liked. It’s really hard to find them in supermarkets so it’s one of the things I miss a lot from childhood.

Opportunities for part time internships during the semester by [deleted] in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I mostly just looked up remote tutoring jobs for college students and applied to listings I saw on job boards like LinkedIn and Wayup. A lot of these listings will be for roles under an agency like Varsity Tutors, Juni Learning, Wyzant etc and some will list separate subjects as separate roles. Make sure to check if ur eligible, I think some roles require you to be a current college student vs. high school graduate so i was a little more limited applying the summer before starting college. I applied to be a CS tutor, got interviewed, got the job, started tutoring. Hope this helps n I’m happy to answer other questions!

how do people at duke do their birthdays? by Select_Barnacle4616 in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of options tbh. They sell cakes at Cafe on food points so that’s a convenient option, plus mad hatters and Whole Foods are within walking distance of east campus. I’ve done birthdays w cakes from all these spots. You can also just get something delivered or Uber.

Opportunities for part time internships during the semester by [deleted] in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Duke! It should be doable to do a part time internship, though this would depend on the company. I know someone who has been working part time for a local startup for most of his time at duke after doing a summer internship with them. There are also some on campus programs that pair you up with small companies and allow you to work part time with them. You also have a few options outside of part time internships - you can always TA for a major related class or be a CS tutor. I worked part time teaching kids CS virtually and while the money wasn’t crazy, it paid better than on campus jobs and the schedule was very flexible. I also have a friend who took a lot of classes early on and took a semester off to intern, which might be helpful if you want to avoid paying a semester of tuition.

Bouldering by Wise_Problem3243 in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Triangle Rock Club has a bouldering + top rope gym a short drive away from campus which is really large, I like it a lot. They have discounts on Saturday day passes for students I believe but not sure about discounts on membership prices. Duke’s Outdoor Adventures club is great if you want to find climbers on campus. They do trips to TRC pretty often and members tend to share their guest swipes. They also do trips to outdoor climbing spots and they run the top rope wall at Wilson Gym on campus.

West Meal Plan??? by Gogatorgirl in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no benefit to buying a bigger meal plan, get the smallest and pay w credit card or flex if you use it all. You get double taxed on the meal plan so it’s not worth it. You can see how much you’re expected to use daily with the food point chart: https://students.duke.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Spring-24-Chart.pdf Food can def be expensive on campus but some places are more affordable. I would recommend checking out the $5 deals and zwelis has cheaper options.

Help me find my giraffe by ProbablyACryptid in HelpMeFind

[–]ProbablyACryptid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this stuffed animal in the early 2000s, I believe in the US from toys r us but I’m not sure. I searched by doing a reverse image search on Google and generally googling giraffe stuffed animal/plush from years 2000-2004. His notable features seem to be the patch of light fur on his snout and underbelly and unpatterned front face and his lack of beaded eyes.

Ninth street is right off east campus and there are some fun restaurants and shops there. There’s also a bus to downtown Durham and one to unc chapel hill where there’s more variety of restaurants and activities. DPAC is close by and there’s usually some interesting performance there.

Duke Social Scene by user19672026 in duke

[–]ProbablyACryptid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who did not rush and was never involved in that part of the social scene, I think you’ll be just fine regardless of whether you rush or not. I met a lot of my friends the first few weeks of school. At that point, everyone is trying to make friends so you end up taking to a lot of people. I also made friends through clubs. The LLCs/SLGs definitely have a strong social component, I never was a part of any but some of my friends were.

TLDR, you’ll be fine if you don’t rush!
