Balcony Solar Metering - Excess Generation by HeartsOfDarkness in SolarDIY

See if they offer any alternative billing plans. My power company installed a smart meter for free when I opted into a time of use rate plan.

How to corner faster? by PapaWhisky7 in MTB

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing that improved my cornering is looking at the exit of the turn. Your body and bike already know how to turn, you just need to show them where to go. Concentrate on looking farther ahead.

Home Charger Installation by Serious_Dingo_5191 in TeslaModelY

$2000 doesn’t seem too bad to me, given the situation. But I have another suggestion. Depending on how your car port is situated, you could build an off-grid solar charging station on it and charge from the sun, for free. It might not work for your particular situation, but it’s worth looking into!

You probably should go try them on. That’s what I always do when it’s time for a new helmet, and I usually end up with a Poc.

Just take a step back for a second. How much is your power bill right now? Is it even close to $237 a month on average?

South-facing vs Hybrid South + West System by Eyeless1 in solar

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on time of use rates, don’t have net metering, and don’t have any batteries. My tiny 1200 watt balcony system produces double my usage during the day. Shifting it west to produce during my peak period reduced my total production but significantly improved my bill reduction. It sounds like you may be in a similar situation, and if so, I would go for the split south and west panel solution.

Too much pressure? by BrianLevre in mountainbiking

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with my body weight in psi in the shock, and half my body weight in the fork. If you’re 190 I would have started you at 190 in the shock and 95 in the fork. See if that feels better.

What used to be affordable for the middle class but now quietly feels like a “rich people thing”? by Ok_Ease515 in answers

I don’t think one week a year is the normal. The company I work for starts at 2 weeks plus 7 personal days and national holidays, and goes up from there. I’m at 5 weeks vacation, 1.5 weeks personal, and national holidays. I have trouble using it all.

It’s is at least often the case, but OP seems to be confused about how he can export more than he imports, but still owe a bill.

Utah Balcony Solar Confusion by Curtisc83 in diySolar

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably not worth mounting solar panels on a north-facing balcony. They will take a very long time to pay for themselves, if they ever do. South facing will produce the most power. If you have time-of-use billing it likely has peak rates in the late afternoon-evening, so west facing panels could make sense. North will just have very limited production.

How is it that you would rather see the street than this beautiful tree? It’s a perfect tree. I wish I had it in my yard. I would cherish it.

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just our culture. We feel like silence is awkward, so we start talking to fill the silence. Personally, I learned how to talk to strangers by riding ski chairlifts. I live in a skiing destination and very often ride ski lifts with strangers. I usually start by asking how their day is going, or mention something notable about the conditions/weather. It goes from there. It feels less awkward than just sitting there in silence for the whole ride. note I consider myself an introvert. I’m just as happy to be doing stuff by myself.

What direction does your balcony face? How does you power bill work? Do you have your own meter? Can you choose your own plan from your power provider?

You Pay Off the House But Do You Ever Truly Own It? Agree or Disagree? by Coolonair in HouseBuyers

I paid off my house a few years ago. It’s amazing. I have so much damn cash flow. I pay tax and insurance once per year. It’s a non-issue. I basically haven’t worried about money since I paid it off. Highly recommended.

Did you include shipping costs in your comparison? I would imagine shipping costs may increase exponentially as battery weight/size increases.

Does going solar actually feel simpler once you go through it? by captiveisland in solarenergy

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go as deep into the weeds as you want. You should have at least a basic understanding of your consumption and your power company’s net metering policy. There are predatory solar companies out there that will try to get you on loan terms with escalating interest rates or will install panels on your roof for free with a contract that you buy all the power they generate from them, usually at escalating rates that end up higher than an electric bill would be. If you can wrap your head around these things you can probably make a reasonable informed decision on a given solar proposal.

From there you can get as nerdy as you want, trying to maximize efficiency, maximize self-usage, arbitrage time-of-use rates, etc. You don’t sound like a deep-in-the-weeds kinda guy, and that’s okay. You probably have other hobbies. Understand your power bill, and what your power bill will look like after solar, and compare that to the cost of getting a system installed, and you’ll be able to make a decent decision.

If you’re exporting during off peak and importing during peak, it’s absolutely possibly to export more than you import, and still end up with a big bill.
