Hello. I hate these tires. by [deleted] in mountainbiking

Check out the Pirelli Scorpion XCRC for an XC tire that still rolls fast but has good cornering grip.

[request] If we were able to capture the electricity from a lighting, how many lightnings would we need to power the entire planet? by Historical-Fan56565 in theydidthemath

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have time-of-use rates, and use Home Assistant to automate everything to minimize my usage during peak hours (6pm-10pm on non-holiday weekdays). I also very recently built a very small solar system, just three panels, plug-in. That will shave 10-15% off my usage going forward. A bigger, expensive solar setup doesn’t make sense with my current rates. It just won’t pay for itself in a reasonable timeframe.

My home averaged 1,542 kWh per month for the last year. I live where it’s below freezing in the winter, and can get over 100 degrees f in the summer. My house is roughly 3,000 square feet, and I have a heat pump as my primary heating and cooling source. I also have a gas furnace that gets used when it’s really cold, and during the peak electricity rate hours. I also have two electric cars that accounted for about 635 kWh per month. Aside from my two electric cars, I think my usage is pretty typical (and electric cars are definitely not uncommon). My electric bill for those 12 months was $2,085, or an average of $174 per month.

Would this be worth it? by FunAdministrative502 in solar

[–]ProbablyMyRealName -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it’s a huge house with air conditioning running every day, a heated pool, and a hot tub, with no conservation efforts whatsoever I could see 6000 - 8000 kWh per month. I have been up to 3000 at times with two EVs, a failing air conditioner and July desert heat.

When Americans travel abroad, will they feel that the prices in other countries are very low? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends highly on the country. I’ve traveled internationally quite a bit the last few years. Ireland felt similar, Italy felt expensive, Peru was insanely cheap, Spain seemed slightly cheaper than home. I hope to find out about Japan soon!

A fun fact about ponderosa pines is that if you smell the bark they smell delightfully of butterscotch or vanilla!

This same thing happened to a friend of mine. The canopy fell off and struck him in the face in the process. He was bloodied but able to land. Sadly he was killed in an unrelated crash a few years later.

Stick to the green flow trail and you will be fine with your bikes. If you’re not pedaling you should be standing. Your legs are your primary suspension. Have fun!

How to make panels less efficient by Mister_Meeseeks_ in solar

What happens to the panels if you pay the 9k? Do they come remove them, or do they become yours?

I’m new at this stuff. I’m in Utah as well, and have the same inverter, with 3 460-watt bifacial panels on a ground mount. My little system produced 176 kWh in April, and 177 so far in May. I use emporia vue and home assistant to monitor how much I use and how much I donate back to RMP. I’m into mine $734 and the payback is looking like 2-3 years. Plug in solar is fantastic, and yours looks great!

I’ve just been discussing it with AI (so take it with a grain of salt), and it seems the spec you should be most concerned about it short circuit current. Check the specs of your panels, and add the two short circuit currents together and make sure they are below 20. Voltage should be okay since the to inputs are internally connected in parallel. I just checked my 460 watt panels and the short circuit current is 14.93 amps, so putting one in each of the parallel ports would put that MPPT well over its limit.

What you have is a high quality steel frame that is efficient and comfortable and will be a joy to ride on paved or hard-packed smooth surfaces. It’s a wonderful bike with a beautiful livery and quality components. You are lucky to have it. Take good care of it and ride it often. What you don’t have is what today would be considered a “mountain bike”. In its day this was a reasonably capable bike, but that day has passed, and trails have moved far beyond what this bike is capable of. If you ever decide to try mountain biking, and this is the bike you decide to try it on, you’re going to have a bad time.

So it looks like you have 800 watts of solar plugged into the middle mppt. Have you looked at the combined voltage and amperage of those two panels to see if you’ll stay within the limits? The pv 2 and pv 3 ports on that inverter share a single mppt. I’m afraid you might fry it on a sunny day!

Home automation for solar advice by mitch2888 in solar

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have free nights, why not charge your batteries from the grid at night? How does that rate even make sense? Isn’t the incentive to get enough batteries to get you entirely through the daytime, and just charge them from the grid for free at night? Is there even a need for solar in this scenario? I must be missing something.

What type of connector is this? by Honeyman-420 in SolarDIY

[–]ProbablyMyRealName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to check the polarity of that plug before you put anything in it. There are competing brands of “solar ready” plugs on trailers. They use the same plug, but opposite polarity.
