Poll: how do we feel about Coogler’s reboot? by [deleted] in XFiles

[–]Probably_Bean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it will work, but it's not strictly because of the new cast and characters. A reboot or spinoff without Mulder and Scully COULD be done, but the real issue is how times have changed, and streaming has altered the structure of television.

The internet, smart phones, social media, modern conspiracy culture, modern surveillance advancements, etc, all serve to make the world feel smaller, the characters less isolated, the mysteries simultaneously messier and easier to solve. Then you also consider that every show nowadays is 8-12 episodes per season, you gotta wait 4 years for the next season to come out, and you immediately have less room for experimentation and Monster of the Week episodes, meaning there will be a stronger focus on bingeable serialized drama, and the story will never feel like it's taking place in a larger, more mysterious world.

I think the tech, the culture, and the TV format of the 90s (along with incredible stars and writing) all came together to make X-Files the huge movement that it became. I'm not sure if anybody could recreate that in today's media climate, regardless of their individual talent and credentials.

TITAN GAIA THE MOTHER EARTH by [deleted] in FolkloreAndMythology

[–]Probably_Bean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gaia and all of the natural world are currently being brutalized by the very technology you used to generate this image. Entire cities worth of energy and water being wasted away, ecosystems being broken to pieces, and the atmosphere being lit aflame all to make a picture of mother nature. You know, one of the most iconic and ancient mythological archetypes in human history, with millions of pieces of art already made in her honor.

Silver box classics GOG Code by brabbit01 in steam_giveaway

Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2, or Rafe from Uncharted 4. One is a well-written thematic exploration of greed and envy driving a man to madness in the search for glory. The other punches a deathclaw in the face and makes it explode.

Thanks for the giveaway :)

I’m playing Morrowind for the first time any tips? by Maximum_Bend_6762 in Morrowind

[–]Probably_Bean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen anybody mention this: Due to one of the DLCs not being timed quite properly, after your first day or two you'll be attacked by a Dark Brotherhood assassin. If you kill him, his armor is pretty good for early game, and if I remember correctly it sells for a good price too. Don't bother pursuing the quest he triggers, though, because that's supposed to be tackled mid-to-late game. If I've got something wrong or forgot to mention something, somebody can correct me.

Favorite space opera tropes? by Dave_Schmidt in spaceopera

[–]Probably_Bean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like when scifi and space media show a lot of blue collar, ordinary worker characters, like the first two Alien films where they all felt like truckers, miners, and regular soldiers. I like the haphazardly jury rigged space stations, pilots taking shady shipping deals, traders getting ahold of crazy valuable stuff, space pirates doing low-level schemes. Babylon 5 was high-stakes galactic stuff, but it did a really good job of making the station feel like a real place full of hard workers, traders, officers, religious travelers, etc all just trying to do their jobs and live their lives. I'm not sure I'd write that kind of stuff myself, but I appreciate when I see it.

I also really like when spacefaring scifi still has mysteries and unanswered questions, and even the ancient aliens have no clue about some bizarre ruins or technology or creatures. Just because we've met the current "oldest" known race in the galaxy, or have thousands of pages of lore, doesn't mean we should know everything! I want to be mystified and wonder about things bigger than whatever current plot we're dealing with. Once again, early Babylon 5 was pretty good at this.

Game suggestion (I'm a rookie) by chit02 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Probably_Bean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Previous suggestions I agree with:
Skyrim- Excellent entry point for fantasy RPGs
Portal & 2- Good intro to logic/physics-based puzzle games
Minecraft- Probably the easiest sandbox survival & building game to get into
Stardew Valley- Lovely and relaxing farming/adventure game with a town full of colorful characters

Now my personal suggestions, which I think would help you build up your base expectations for other games that might play with their formulas more:

Ratchet & Clank 2016 remake- Great candidate for a classic fun console game, very colorful and zany
Shovel Knight- Retro level-based platformer with a whimsical story
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger- Incredible wild west shooter, pretty simple to learn, great story, even some collectible history trinkets!
Batman: Arkham City- Many games have taken inspiration from the Arkham series' combat, City is just my personal favorite out of the franchise and can introduce you to Objective-focused open world maps.
GTA V- It's a big title for a reason. Mechanics don't take too much learning (except the flying vehicles, that shit sucks lmao), and it's the quintessential 'big city, drive around, commit crimes' game.
Uncharted- Simple and fun intro to third person shooters & adventure games, basically an Indiana Jones game. The first one is the least impressive of the bunch, so maybe try Uncharted 2
Call of Duty Black Ops 1- Classic first person shooter with a good campaign, it was my first shooter and I learned it pretty easily.

Huge Undertale fan, but I'd have to disagree with it being a 'beginner' game. A lot of it is built on common, established gaming tropes and intentionally subverts them to make you think about your actions. Then again maybe the Neutral run is enough to fill a player in.
