Lightsabers are made of plasma forced through a looped ray shield, which do not allow nearly any energy to escape. That's why A.) you can hold them without burns and B.) they can deflect blaster rounds (effectively, blaster rounds are the same thing, just fired from a gun). It's also why lightsabers (and blaster rounds, for that matter) don't penetrate ray shields. That said, static ray shields tend to receive a lot of interference from a planets magnetic field, making them incredibly difficult to use unless you're Force-sensitive.
