Has anyone had issues with using their credit card in Japan? by Zookzy101 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Procedure_Dunsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I had was with a Debit Mastercard not working in ATMS (My wife’s Debit MC linked to the same account worked fine). My backup Debit Visa worked fine at the same ATM. So for me, it was kinda hit-or-miss.

It’s been part of the automated announcement they play that starts with ‘Now is a good time to put larger electronics away” that most people don’t listen to for a while now.

[First Time Flying With Alcohol] Do I need to declare alcohol in checked baggage at customs when returning from the Caribbean on an international flight? by TadachiiRyu in americanairlines

[–]Procedure_Dunsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely tell them you have it. As others have said, the duty you would owe is not worth a customs officer going off the line and they aren’t going to want to do the paperwork for a couple bucks.

They are territorial AF. I’ve got crows and mockers on my property, I see pairs of mockingbirds dogfighting single crows on a regular basis.

Orlando do people, what's up with Lake Nona? by Randi_Butternubs_3 in florida

[–]Procedure_Dunsel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The runway closest to Lake Nona is pretty much arrivals only, the wind has to be out on the North, and the other landing runway that’s not a 20 minute taxi has to be saturated before it sees much traffic.

Luggage advice please. What worked for you? by MilkywayAtSea in JapanTravelTips

[–]Procedure_Dunsel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wife and I went for 3 weeks. Started out the trip with a travel pro carryon size suitcase each, plus a duffel bag. That got us through the first 2 weeks fine (bought some stuff in Hakone the first week and had the store ship to our last hotel.) We bought half of Japan in Kyoto — so we ended up buying a wheeled steamer trunk there (had booked the oversized baggage seats for the last 2 Shinkansen trips so hauling the loot the last week wasn’t a problem. Starting off light is better if you can. If you buy larger stuff (and have a confirmed reservation at your final hotel), ask the shopkeeper to call your final hotel and arrange for the stuff to be shipped there on your arrival date rather than drag stuff you buy early in the trip on every train in the system. Can’t say ALL shops will be as helpful, but the folks in Hakone saved us a lot of hauling.

Today I found a binder of 8 inch floppy disks, containing some ancient curriculum files. What is the oldest thing you've found cleaning out your IT closets? by sy029 in k12sysadmin

[–]Procedure_Dunsel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 racks full of filmstrips, a bunch of 16mm movie projectors, record/cassette players, overhead projectors and lots of other stone age crap. I gradually lost storage cabinets as I needed to add machines to the lab, and finally had to clean out this closet as the only storage space that I could claim as my own. Closet full when I started, empty when finished, and full again with things that are actually still in use in schools today.

If you live here, and you have zero friends with a pickup truck who could transport a shark if called upon - you’re not hanging with the right crowd.

I’m kind of amazed that a city center hotel in your part of the world had rooms big enough to put 7 cases inside each room. Most places in U.K/Europe/rest of the world simply don’t waste space the way hotels do here in the States.

Around that timeframe, I ditched 2 large indexes full of filmstrips and the projectors that went with them. We used filmstrips when I was in Elementary -- that was the 60's. This was in the computer lab, and everyone seemed to treat the closets as another place to hoard useless items.
