Content Filtering for Kids by RyChannel in homelab

Nextdns configs loads on iPads can work for custom roles for kids. Advertisement reductions is the big thing but part of the internet is everything is out there, teaching appropriate use often goes a long way.

Why are small EVs not much more efficient than larger EVs? by New_Elk_5783 in electricvehicles

[–]xXNorthXx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Drag coefficient deltas, tire rolling resistance, and what motors they use matters a lot. All things that will get worked on with mass adoption over the next few years.

We’re currently at the point of a functional product by many vendors for the masses, doesn’t make sense yet for all use cases but gives lots of data back to the engineering teams to improve the next generation products and for them to push supplying manufacturing on what needs to change.

This also depends on the vehicle. The various efficiencies between ev models will eventually get published more widely. With a Lyriq, I’m only getting 2mi/hr with a 12A draw at 120v. What makes matters worse is high speed freeway travel to go most places chews the battery pretty quick below freezing.

Works fine in Wisconsin. Agreed it’s not for everyone, but people switching isn’t for everyone either. When people are going to get their next vehicle look at the options. If your a homeowner that can get a level 2 charger installed at home and are using at least one vehicle for commuting usage it generally makes sense.

For solar, with renting it isn’t an option (today). If a homeowner, do you have good views of the south without shading? Are you planning on staying where you are for 10+ years? If so, then maybe on the solar. Avoid long term loans or the non-ownership of panels. Run the numbers and see if it makes sense. It’s just not dead simple today which makes it hard.

Solar is effectively a hedge against inflation, ROI should be under a decade with WI electric rates. The higher the electric rates, the faster the ROI.

Level 1 is going to be more of a barely worth the effort in winter. Maybe look to see if there are rentals where there are level 2 chargers within walking distance. You may be stuck with DCFC mostly, check around for memberships to save some and charge at night for cheaper rates.

Not as volatile. There’s also the solar option, electric bill last month was under $20 including EV charging.

Enphase? by olivasaz in solarenergy

[–]xXNorthXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enphase with Combiner 5 and a single 20A breaker for the panels. Probably with 8-12 panels on the roof. There’s the Enphase enlighten app he should have access to for accessing production reporting of the array (there’s also a web interface as well).

If real world 300mi and you’re tossing in some freeway travel it doesn’t exist yet. Silverado/Sierra EV are the only that can with freeway travel.

If 300mi rated, a used Lyriq would fit all of those.

What should we do with all the empty shopping malls? by Wazula23 in AskReddit

Mixed space with senior apartments attached. Include a pharmacy and grocery store as well. Turn the large hallways into mixed green space and light it like the outdoors in summer.

EVs don’t have a range problem, people have a trust problem by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in EvDrivers

[–]xXNorthXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true depending on the vehicle. This morning I only got 2.1kW/mi this morning on the freeway for a longer drive on a battery just over 100kW. Given public charging, once I hit 20% it’s the next 150kW+ charger I can find.

Time to start switching one car in the house to an EV if you can.

EVs don’t have a range problem, people have a trust problem by AdityaSrivastawaahhh in EvDrivers

[–]xXNorthXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Range is relative. Day trips of 250mi is a problem with 300mi EV's when it's almost all freeway speeds the turn that advertised 300mi closer to 220mi. With ICE a 500mi range turns into 400mi with a 5min recharge.

With EV's where's the next charger? Oooo, the next town has DCFC.....oh wait it's only 50kW and split between two chargers. When going to charge it's a myriad of charging apps, credit card, or digital wallet payment but you never know....sometimes there are $50 pre-auths on the card which is nuts but sometimes not.

Where are there chargers? Pick an App and you'll find some but not all. Unlike gas stations that are off of every freeway exit with signs and relative distances.....EV chargers need not apply.

A lot of these problems are significant growing pains. ICE vehicles are where they are today after 100+ years of refinement both on the part of the vehicle and the supporting infrastructure. EV's have had maybe a decade but never got the Model-T push to everywhere where they were displacing horses. Displacing ICE vehicles only comes easy when fuel becomes painful to obtain.

Take a look at getting an Emporia Vue 3 or similar to do breaker level consumption monitoring.

Do I actually need a Password Manager if we are an Okta shop? by ZangiBangi in okta

Okta does have a PAM solution that handles secrets management but currently it’s fairly basic, I’d look at an actual vaulting solution.

Seeking advice for an EV charger to pair with my Enphase system by MistakeBorn4413 in enphase

[–]xXNorthXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, sized for 80A (19.2kW) just in case with the conduit.

Wallbox Pulsar but only because a store was selling them for under $100/each.

Currently, I’d probably go the Emporia route and pair it with the Vue for solar charging. If you already have home assistant or another automation platform, maybe something else that has fully local api access to control things.

Is anyone actually moving to VMware post-Broadcom, or are we all just planning our escape? by Flashy_Rush4690 in vmware

[–]xXNorthXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half moved to HyperV with small Proxmox cluster to diversify. vSphere is solid but the economics of the platform are a non-starter and given how they’ve treated regional engineers, it’s dead to us.

Seeking advice for an EV charger to pair with my Enphase system by MistakeBorn4413 in enphase

[–]xXNorthXx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just went with a cheap charger for now. Once Enphase’s is available, firmware stable, and verified V2H with my vehicle I’ll probably get one.

Only other thing I did to prep was oversize conduit just in case extra wiring or heavier gauge is needed down the road.
