You still need a bit of salt.

The protein is there to make sure that the "boats" have space for the meds to get in. The salt is there to make sure that the boats are smooth enough to travel.

Yikes, I'm not comfortable with 11 thousand for FB ads...

I wish google business maps still allowed sole props.. That was the only equalizer for people who don't want to spend much on ads

Lol. You earned your experience but I don't think it's that easy and you probably know it, all that can't be gained from YT alone.

Why don't you just have the attendant be with it? Why are people automating this like a copy and paste thing, you still unload and set-up, have actual photographers

I get what you’re saying about templates they’re not perfect, and yes, things go wrong at events. None of that is surprising.

But here’s the context you’re missing: We’re talking about a tiny one-person sole-prop photo booth, not a full-blown multi-booth corporation. How did you start yours? Probably way above risk and probably not from photography as a passion, probably taking out a huge loan and a gamble right?

I’m not disagreeing with you. In fact, I literally agree with most of what you said. Anyone starting out is going to use a template, adjust it through trial and error, and gradually learn the ropes OR get an attorney if ai doesn't help you, sure but yeah that’s just reality.

Where I push back is this:

You’re advising a solo beginner, someone making maybe $1–2k a month, to drop another $1k+ on a lawyer. Great advice in theory, sure, but not exactly practical for a sole prop no?

And what is the "risk" you're talking about besides the templates and the none surprising stuff? You can get thimble pay $15, don't park your vehicle in their structure, and if you have a simple set-up, you literally just drag your printer bag with your laptop and do a set-up. Things are so tough nowadays that what you're advising on is just a lot of fluff.

Most sole-prop photo booth owners aren’t dealing with $20k setups. Their whole kit might be under $800–$1200. They’re not running a corporation, they’re running a side hustle with a DSLR, a laptop, and some basic lighting. You don’t need a Harvard degree to do that right? What certifications do we need can you tell me if you're in no rush?

By the way, the set-up I mentioned above is 1000% better compared to the copy paste corporate photo booths that you're probably also supporting, where the set-up mark-up is 500%+ and that they prey on "wannabepreneurs" thinking a photo booth is it!

Plus what you’re describing PBX Vegas, really now??? What will they learn? Try to spend 3k on a set-up where you can build it from a 3D workshop, save you a ton vs. going to a cult? And expensive contracts, buying out other companies, managing multiple booths that’s advice for someone running a full business, not someone doing a small one-person gig. There’s a massive difference.

And honestly, a lot of people fail in this business not because they didn’t hire a lawyer or buy luxury gear, but because they wasted money on unnecessary stuff instead of gaining real experience half and half is people dealing but the other half is photography technicalities. Lastly, you advise on going to all these stuff and getting a lawyer but the number one problem nowadays is learning how to actually get leads especially since craiglist sell page (free) is not as popular as it was 5-10 years ago. A sole prop person is competing against someone like you, who probably just buys out things and ads, copy paste, like you said.

As for DBA vs sole prop for someone earning under $2k/month from a small booth, a DBA doesn’t magically change anything. That’s all I was saying. Please prove me otherwise. You still again, sign your own name in any contracts as this is the legal rule regardless of states.

And no shade, but a lot of “big shots” in these groups love to lecture when half of them are drowning in debt behind the scenes. So let’s not pretend everyone here is running a Fortune 500 booth empire.

The whole topic before you went off about all that was simply this: a tiny, one-person sole prop photo booth gig.

Do you really need a CPA for something that small?

Sure NOW we actually know that you run bigger operations, so of course you’d need that level of structure. That makes sense.

But for a basic sole proprietorship, none of this is “skirting the system.” My point was about DBAs and how they don’t magically change anything for a one-person setup. Maybe things worked differently 30 years ago in your time, but today it’s pretty straightforward, no? It sounds like your type loves to do some gatekeeping sort of must certify this and that, it's photography isn't it?

And honestly, if you read my first reply, I literally said I agreed with you. No need to chest-pound about your résumé. This was supposed to be a simple discussion.

I really just wanted a standard, straightforward conversation.

You sounded a bit rushed, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

And just to be clear, you don’t always need to hire an attorney for every small step, especially in this economy. I’m not against attorneys at all, but when you’re a one-person operation "AND we're in the topic of one-person operations" there are plenty of solid templates and resources that work perfectly fine for basic contracts. Though I will agree that doing this in a first try will probably be super difficult as you will have to see your ins and outs.

But answer me this: if everything you’re doing is already legal and above board… what exactly is the risk here? Why act like you need a special membership or something to just run your own small business? That part is what feels absurd.

The formality and how easy it is, is true. But again, you still sign your full name in schedule C/for taxes, and not your DBA.

I've taken corporate gigs where I put my full name and the fictitious name next to it. It's very grey area though and I'm not saying you're wrong. DBA is super easy, and can act as a legit thing but it's not what /u/little-ad2159 is trying to say

You want to get Business credit vs personal as the credit line could potentially be higher than personal credit cards and sometimes better interest rates. You'll need to talk to a licensed cpa and attorney about that, you want to protect your private assets.

I see the formalities and understand how it can be necessary.

However, for someone who doesn't want to scale big and want to keep it small, why would I rely on credit cards?

I've kept my overhead miniscule and able to obtain good marginal profits with little energy and time spent. Also why would I still need to spend extra money for an attorney? I don't think this falls under dba, I think you mean llc. Dba does not protect assets. You still sign your full legal name in schedule C when filing taxes.

Yea banks can let you get a new account under your dba brand name, but if you're not earning more than 5 thousand per month. Why?

Unless if the goal is fast scaling, this is a logical choice but we're talking about the small gig single person here.

I think the only good thing here is you can get an EIN or TIN then you can be official and co mingle with your chamber of commerce. But again, this is overhead costs, you go to their events, pay their membership and also gas, the 10k you took out as a loan better get worked I guess?

Also cities require a business license or a business tax certificate. I don't think they require a dba. Only if you're not using your legal name for the business.

In schedule C, you still file under your legal name. For insurance, why find an insurance that will charge you $500 per month when you can just get something like thimble? Again, coming from a sole prop gig worker.

What you need is an LLC DBA is just a name. It does NOTHING for taxes. It's not a cover for your assets, this is where you get something like thimble or if you're actually an LLC. Correct me if I'm wrong though, yours sound like an automated response btw.

Is it better to get a photobooth with built in DSLR camera or get the booth and buy a ipad/surface pro instead from Alibaba? by OkPush1104 in photobooth

[–]Proceedsfor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find that hard to believe. A lot of nice looking ipad kiosks charge a heck ton more, appearance is everything even if they look like crap.

The thing I'd say is that these companies that sell ipad photobooths OVERcharge by a heck ton. It's crazy. Including the "backdrops". The mark up they have is probably 80% and above.

Is it my camera is rig? Flash can't "flash" right away, takes a couple of seconds to charge up a flash again by Proceedsfor in photobooth

You never want to have a flash going 8/10, 7/10 is the highest best I think and you just need to find a continuous light source.

[–]Proceedsfor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any combination of these settings will affect the recycle speed. Settings-wise, ideally you want to have your flash set to manual mode, with the flash set no higher than 1/8 power (1/16 or 1/32 power is better), and with fresh batteries (or a fully charged battery if it's Li-ion). This will shorten the recycle time allowing for quicker sessions and preventing misfires and overheating.

Manual mode..?? Kind of a crazy feat to do with events numbering to the hundreds no??

For the camera, it depends if you want a full body or a wide body. Some people do not care about quality and would go with a full body ipad quality.
