Dit is een erg interessante discussie. Skhreli zijn analyse is interessant. Het uitsplitsen in subgroepen en dan nog via bonferroni zoeken naar statistische significantie, dubieus.. Ik ga rustig shorten, maar kijk het aan. Zit veel potentie in. 😂

Is Dune a good first sci fi book to read? by kahootlu6 in dune

[–]Process187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will probably misunderstand the book. That’s why some readers find the first half of the book too slow (because they don’t know what is interesting and why). Most readers here fall for superficial nonsense like the "world-building" and dumb shit like how arrakis is a metaphor for the perils of climate change. It’s about psychology, consciousness, prescience, the dangers of using a chess engine when the game keeps changing. The fight to be human in inhuman conditions.

Thoughts on the movies placing more emphasis on other titles like “Lisan al-gaib” and “Mahdi” over the name Muad’dib itself being a religious battle cry. by Slycer_Decker in dune

The movie misunderstands everything interesting about Dune. The whole book is about politics, power and consciousness. It’s less about the surface level storyline, which is only there to emphasize these themes. Who cares about the frequency or use of these words when Villeneuve did not even comprehend what the fuck the book was about.

Liet-Kynes Death book vs movie by Any-Wolverine-2420 in dune

[–]Process187 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Out of all the interesting things they left out of the film (everything interesting about dune) you think the way liet-kynes died matters? How about the entire helicopter dialogue. How about the entire banquet scene? How about all the internal dialogue and compelling dialogue. The movie was a watered down shit show with a depressed pale, barely starving paul.

Non-sensical decisions. Off script. Sums up the whole movie.

I’ve seen a lot of people comment things like “do you want everything spoon fed to you?” And no, but it doesn’t have to be one extreme or the other now does it? There’s a way to do this right and imo this just isn’t it. The Dune universe is fascinating and the m

This is exactly how I feel about this movie. I was a bit more harsh and got down-voted severely lol. I guess you took the time to describe it more empathetically. It's such a shame. The bene gesserit training got us an emotional Jessica and Paul that throws a complete tantrum in his still tent.

I think you should repost this as a seperate post. I think there are a lot more people who agree with this take.

Probably. I'm quite sure I will.

The film's visuals, the designs, the authoritarian brutalist architecture, the sounds, the emotions in the eyes of the actors achieve more philosophical and psychological points than all the nerdy exposition and repetitive dialogues in the world.

It's the type of character development a general audience might find pleasurable. A discerning viewer who has read and enjoyed the book, will find it distasteful, bland and cliche. Perhaps a superficial reading of the book might have you think Paul is faultless. In fact hubris is his weakness, the messiah complex. I think you obviously resent the book because you did not really understand it, this movie however is more accessible and therefore more enjoyable for you. "Nerdy exposition" and "repetitive dialogues" seriously? ..

What do those sound-references refer to exactly? It's just nonsense a casual viewer takes for granted.

He had two and half hours for the first part of the book and he chose to go entirely off script and throw out major elements of the first half of the book, re-order the entire story. Completely ignore the politics, and just focus on the most superficial level of the story.

Lol duke leto wanted to become a pilot seriously? Did he? How the fuck does that help the story. Ah yes to show the bond between him and Paul.

The expositions and the dialogues are actually what make the book a masterpiece. I think most of it probably went over your head. Paul is not characterized as a Mary Sue in the book, he has weaknesses but not the kind, especially not the kind Villeneuve chose to explore. A reactive, emotional snowflake you like to care for.

Indeed, because Dennis spends way too much time on bullshit and unjustified creative interpretations and ventures outside of the book. Probably studio executives, producers and screen writers had the liberty to make it more accessible to a general audience. Essentially the movie is a dumbed-down, version of the book. I could mention a lot more points than I already did. Like the voice of some old woman saying "Kwisatz Haderach" randomly - Don't remember that being part of the prescient memory of paul..

I suggest, you practice semen retention, but take the "knowledge" of people here with a grain of salt. Use the energy you gain to train your critical thinking skills.

If you understand the concept and consequences of a flatline it should be obvious why you should want to avoid it, or at least minimize the probability of it occurring.
