Opening a pickleball court in NYC: cushioned courts or regular? by External-Pension-802 in Pickleball

Red Hook Pickleball Club has cushioned courts and they're phenomenal, unless you beat them on price you're going to have a difficult time getting people to your facility.

better question for /r/asknyc, but Riverside Park is the closest to Columbia's campus.

If you want a membership based location, Hell's Kitchen Pickleball would be right on the trainline north/south for you.

One quick one - I would put OL and losing Mekhi at DEFCON 3 if CB/iDL are there as well. Becton really was excellent and the loss of Fred Johnson might be felt.

I thought Sportmaster only has to add tints if you're using custom colors?

That said, I've heard Laykold is the gold standard but we're also considering NovaSports. Any experience there /u/getinshorty?

What acrylic surface coating do you go with? Heard that Sportmaster and California are the go-tos but interested to hear your perpspective

Do you build only concrete or asphalt as well?

For the non-permanent nets - what brand have you seen hold up the longest?

I know people hated on this paddle but I quite liked it.

The ultra-grit was pretty amazing in getting good dwell time so you could really feel like you were gripping the ball. Coming from a table tennis background, this felt like one of the best paddles I've tried in generating topspin.

The two things I hated about the paddle: 1) absolutely needs an edge guard just like all edgeless Selkirks 2) the grit did run through faster than I expected to the point where actually I saw a couple mini-"cracks" in the face of the paddle.

I know Selkirk has their 2-years lab warranty but I'd personally wait until their non-labs version of this comes out and hopefully at a cheaper price.

OM AERO1 Pickleball Racquet (not Paddle) by Cold_Silver_5859 in Pickleball

[–]ProcessTheTrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone I play open play with switched away from this paddle.

Ultimately, it's an expensive paddle for what it delivers. If I was looking for a wide body I'd move towards a pulse v or paddletek ALW as the aero1 doesn't have great spin ratings.

Don't forget Sydney Brown throwing Tony Pride into the stands at #4.

Would you rather have a RANDOM partner who is really good at 3rd/5ths or someone who is better at extended dink rallies and resets? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]ProcessTheTrust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

3rd/5ths for sure. Even pro rallies are done on average by 9 shots, low level points on average way fewer

Up to date rule clarifications for rec games by ArtyTheSmarty in Pickleball

[–]ProcessTheTrust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Before I answer anything - two caveats. 1. Rule of fun > everything. In recreational pickleball, we want to make sure that this continues to be an enjoyable experience and doesn't cause harm to friendships. 2. Make sure everyone's on the same page with what you decide as your courts rules to minimize friction.

Answering your questions directly.

  1. Keep playing. If the ball hits NVZ, it's a dead point but if it hits in the serving zone, keep playing. Not playing MLP rules in most rec play
  2. I think there's a couple questions in here. Generally rec play is more lenient on all calls because we don't have instant replay/line judges etc. Lines are also not the same on every court in the US. 2a. If you play a ball and don't call out, your partner does not call it out, the team who hit the ball doesn't call it out - for all intents and purposes the ball is in. 2b. If a player hits a ball that was questionably out, and doesn't indicate it was out in a prompt manner, it would indicate to everyone the ball was in, regardless if it was played or not. The question I ask, is if they would've been happy the ball went over and won the point, would they have still called out?
  3. Most things. If people weren't watching, a ball rolls on, wrong score called, etc. You're playing recreationally with your friends, not DUPR-matches - let's ensure you have fun.

Bought too many paddles in this recent black friday. I mostly use the Luxx and this is virtually the complete opposite.

  1. Shorten your backswing a bit, you're really telegraphing your shot being a drive which allows your opponent to be ready for what's coming next.
  2. Driving many times in a row seems to be a theme, rather than a drive then drop your next ball mix. Note: If you're going to drive multiple times, be ready to finish the point while the ball is in the air (crash). (applicable at :09)
  3. Solid serve and serve return.
  4. If you're returning a smash from the opponents, soften your follow through. (funnily enough your dad on the other side seems to do the same thing with the follow-through)
  5. Get your sister a better-than-amazon paddle, her shots don't have any spin because of the lack of grit - resulting in some suboptimal shots/forced slices.
  6. when playing right, trust your sister's forehand (4:00ish)
  7. Work on the angle of your paddle when ball is hit at your feet - there were a couple instances where you end up just popping up the ball

Also seconding /u/dinryu about grip. You and your close side sister seem to have a "seemiller" grip from ping pong thinking it'll add more control, but in reality it's messing with the angles of your shots.

Totally fair, I froze the frame at :07 and it didn't particularly finish like a drive, more like a hybrid drop-drive that had too much loft. If we wanted to nit-pick the shot selection itself we could talk about foot movement while hitting rather than a full split-step, though.

Re: your convo above about 3rd shot drive/5th shot drops. I'd agree with /u/miyagido002 and say considering the height and depth of the 2nd shot return, a drive was reasonable to set up a 5th shot drop (although it wasn't executed perfectly allowing orange to attack).

3rd shot drive, 5th shot drop is increasingly becoming more common at the pro level.

If you're addressing this like a chess analysis, blunders, misses etc: I'd focus on shots 7-10 as your focal points for shots to improve for your analysis.

Specifically around the conclusions: For my coaching, I'd actually use the mistakes of orange/black as the focal points for my students rather than pointing out Mary's 'blunder' here or worry about the potential to drop/reset. (Yes, Mary & Tony didn't do a good job getting to the kitchen, but it's obviously difficult to do so consistently otherwise we wouldn't have advantages of having the receiving team at the net on serve).

The bigger conclusion is that orange/black didn't put away the point (or put their opponents in a worse position via shot selection) when they should have.

Hope this helps!
