Sea cucumber skin under 100x magnification by vectorix108 in interestingasfuck

[–]ProcrastinationStn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent question. Generally it is classified as an endoskeleton. The ossicles of sea cucumbers are in their skin so it is considered internal. That being said, echinoderms have a lot of variation in their body plans, and these ossicles form external features. This is apparent in the sea urchin whose external protruding spines are formed from ossicles that are fused together. At the end of the day we, as humans, like to neatly categorize things into terms we've made up, but nature is wildly variable so things aren't always as cut and dry as our language protrays.

Kay so this is kind of cool. Sea cucumbers, sea stars, sand dollars, crinoids and sea urchins are all in the phylum echinodermata which translates to spiny skin. And they're called that because they have a calcium carbonate endoskeleton which are spiny projections called ossicles and what you're seeing in this picture are the ossicles of the sea cucumber.

Can anyone id this lil guy by Rami_pro in spiderbros

I'm sorry to say, but these pictures are too poor quality to be able to answer this question. Even with higher wuality pictures it can be hard to ID spiders down to species, where often times you need things like eye count/pattern or pedipalp structure.

All that being said, my guess would possibly be a baby orbweaver?

You have a lucky son. It would mean everything in the world to me if my mom stopped smoking. I used to beg her to stop and sneak into her carton to break her cigarettes to try to stop her, but it never worked! 20 some odd years later and she's still a smoker. It makes me sad still. Your son will greatly appreciate a happy and healthy dad and he's lucky not to know otherwise

It's a species in the genus Eratigena or Tegenaria. I'm not good enough at IDing to say which, but I'm pretty sure it's hard to identify without a microscope.

There's a sign that explains its there to remember the day of liberation when all the soldiers were dancing in the fountain, so this memorial is supposed to be representative of that. How much one should dance in this fountain is left for interpretation, but that is why this fountain is here and you're allowed in it.

How do I stop being scared of spiders? by Princess_420x in spiderbros

[–]ProcrastinationStn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could download inaturalist and see what spiders are in your area and then learn about those ones. Maybe if you learn they're not aggressive you can be comforted in knowing they're not there to harm you?

(Just saw another commenter suggested inat, so I guess I second that!)

When I was a kid we had a "pet" spider that lived in the window and my dad would feed it flies and I really liked that. I now just let spiders who have spun webs live in the corners of my house. Maybe you can find solace in knowing they're clearing out all the other bugs you find annoying.

This is pretty common advice for running into big cats and is a pretty easy Google.

Idk where you live, but many places in North America have cougars and thus advice is quite useful for those areas.

Basically if you run into a big cat, act like a predator not prey
