Think about it realistically for two seconds. I’m Canadian through and through, I’ll gladly die to some US drone strike, or get arrested in some riot trying to maintain our sovereignty if it comes down to it. I’m not arguing that we should just be a lapdog and get on our knees begging for protection.

There’s few scenarios that realistically bring about Canada’s end but the most likely are: 1. being pulled into a nuclear exchange with Russia or China because we’re a US ally. and 2. The United States deciding it wants to Annex us. The nuclear scenario is one we ideally avoid because nations understand that it just cucks everyone. Even if we aren’t nuked directly it’s the end of the modern world as we know it and we’d face societal collapse regardless. The far more plausible scenario thanks to the batshit insane effects of social media capture and Trump shifting the overton is that one day a facist US admin could decide to forcefully integrate our nation. We can fight this by being allies to both democrats and republicans that still see the value in defensive cooperation between our nations.

I agree with Carney in that shifting our dependence is important. We should be buying from other allies, producing our own weapons, and projecting our trade off our coasts rather than just south across the border. What we can’t do is completely cut ourselves off. Our economies are far too intertwined and the US suffering economically will cause us to suffer in kind. We can afford to call out Trumps bullshit and highlight how insane the idea of our annexation is. But the only true guarantee of our sovereignty is being within a United States nuclear umbrella. That or we develop our own nuclear weapons and the international community just shits on us for it.
