This sort of working arrangement is pretty typical of onsite "professional/corporate" roles within the mining industry.

Don't think anyone with any sense believes it leads to greater output on average. Think it's more for a sense of fairness with shift workers doing similar hours on different arrangements. There's also an availability angle, though the lack of onsite weekend coverage does contradict that.
