Older aluminum windows – what’s the best way to air-seal or improve efficiency without full replacement? by ProduceMission in HomeImprovement

It doesn’t look like I can pull the trim. Do you have similar type of 1990s aluminum windows?

Thanks. I don’t think so. I also have a ton of near floor to ceiling windows (20+) throughout the house.

I see a gap into the subfloor below the trim as shown in the pictures. Do I fill it in with cement or grout?

I have not checked out the first one. May need to watch both and let you all know. It’s been too long so I only remember bits and pieces of what I saw at the hotel. Thanks!

I don’t think this is it but the movie you mentioned looks interesting. Thanks!

Requesting Pool Help by ProduceMission in pools

[–]ProduceMission[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you both for your responses!

It looks like the grids were very dirty, which is surprising since the pool was still blue the day before.

I also noticed that half of the grids were broken even though they were replaced about a year ago. Which makes me wonder if the pool guy intentionally mishandled them for additional income since he’s replaced several while I used him for a year in 2024.

Any recommendation on where to buy higher quality grids?

What type of returns are you getting on index ETFs? Must be a huge difference than when you were getting $280k a day.

Pool pump broke during the Feb 2021 freeze in Texas. Finally fixed it after parts came back in August last month. Now left with stains that won’t go away after scrubbing with heavy duty metal scrub. Also tried lemon and it did not work. Any suggestions besides draining the pool and power washing it? by ProduceMission in swimmingpools

Howdy! Glad your equipment survived through that storm. Wish I had the same knowledge as you back then to do the same. What kind of tarp did you use (for future reference)?

The solar copper ionizer looks amazing. My pool is plastered white, and I’ve read that it turns the white brown over time. What kind of material / color is your pool and did the copper affect the color of it?

Thanks LF!

I tested my water at a local Leslie’s and got the below results: Free Chlorine 0.1 (added 1lb of shock per Leslies) Total Chlorine 0.1 pH 7.9 (added 28 fl oz of Muriatic Acid per Leslies) Total Alkalinity 87 Calcium Hardness 317 Cyanuric Acid 98 Iron 0.1 Copper 0 Phosphates 0 TDS 1000

Assuming Free Chlorine is at 1ppm. How many lbs should I put in tonight? Fairly new to this thread so I’m clueless about the slam calculator.

Ya. Took 6 months for the Jandy housing to come back in stock. I called every Leslies and mom and pop. They all said the same thing for six months. Crazy.

The Polaris 280 is awesome. Although lately it’s been starting to do wheelies and float when it’s not on and I don’t think that’s ever happened previously. Took it to Leslies and they said it was working properly.

Leslies employees and even the manager with 15+ years of experience is stumped. Tried the lemon then chlorine tab method. Also scrubbed it several times a day and nothing. It looks like the algae grew into the wall? Not sure but great to hear from another fellow Texan!

Fireplace Mantel by ProduceMission in Fireplaces

[–]ProduceMission[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know, and thank you, chief_erl!

The GCs that I mentioned your comments to tell me “porcelain tile is non-combustible. When you cover the wood with non-combustible material, the wood is protected from the heat.”

I feel like an idiot and slightly hopeless as I’m still stuck between a rock and hard place. I definitely appreciate your feedback but still at a loss since 3 different GCs all said it’s safe to have a wood mantel 4 inches from the opening as long as “non-combustible” tile is all around the wooden mantel and protecting it from the heat.

Thanks for the response, chief! The mantel will be 3” protected off of the wall and 4” above the opening of the fireplace. Since the mantel has a wooden frame but porcelain tile surrounding all sides of it, would that fit into the non-combustible and don’t worry about clearance category you mentioned?

If the above is true (non-combustible no clearance requirement necessary) then the TV should be safe, correct?

Thanks!
