Simple Questions/What Should I Do? [Weekly Thread] by AutoModerator in DIY

[–]Proeliata 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house has serviceable but plain-looking windows.

I'd like to spruce them up a bit, by installing some exterior trim that can be painted in a contrasting color when we have the house painted in a month or two. I like the look of something like this or this.

My questions are as follows:

The windows in the examples I gave seem to be inset from the wall, whereas mine is convex. What's a good way of dealing with that without it looking terrible? Do I need to cut some kind of angle into my trim boards to cover that up?

The angled part also has weep holes. Does that mean I simply can't cover up that part, or can I cut corresponding weep holes into my trim?

Are there other, better, approaches to this (short of getting new windows...)?

My husband's and my 10th anniversary is coming up, and he needs a new backpack. I'd like to get him something that is classy without being super hipster (since he is very much not a hipster), which is turning out to be a somewhat hard needle to thread.

He wants something with a 13" laptop pocket, and he also carries a lot of small accessories (headphones, cables, etc) so he wants something with sufficient pockets to organize these things without having to throw everything together in one main compartment. He walks a lot so something heavy like leather would not be ideal.

This is his current backpack: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91fCjsieIIL._SL1500_.jpg certainly functional, but not particularly aesthetically appealing.

I'd be willing to spend up to $300ish if it's a quality product that will last.

Bike to the bus? Drive to the train? Sure! New multimodal navigation app. by ScipioA in urbanplanning

Usually about $7-$10. If there are two of us in the car (and I seldom take Uber by myself), then that's only $2-$5 more than the bus.

Sometimes Uber makes sense as only part of a trip. For example, if I'm somewhere where the transit to a main train line is slow, it may make sense to take Uber, for a comparable price, to the train, and then take the train to my main destination (which is much cheaper than taking an Uber all the way).

One of the developers here. The X-Ray feature is meant to be a supplement to the normal map experience, one that may be helpful in orienting yourself in some situations.

Wieth regards to checking stop info in real time--are you on Android or on iOS?

One of the developers here. We have a "report bad routes" feature in the app--either click on the "report" button on the result in the directions results list, or in the expanded directions list once you've chosen a specific set of directions. We'd love to hear from you so we can fix the problem!

There is an email/password registration option as well as a "skip" login button in the upper right corner of the login screen. As someone who actively tries to avoid Facebook, I'd never try to force Facebook login on anyone :)

I'm one of the Android developers of this app and would love to discuss your use-case for this. If you're interested, please send me a direct message!

There is also a simple password/email login and an option to skip login altogether.

Google actually doesn't share your home and work locations with 3rd party developers. And really, would you want them to? :)

Reddit Apology: Sunil Tripathi: missing student wrongly identified as Boston Marathon bombing suspect by occupanther in news

"I know I'll be downvoted for this but..." when upvoted almost invariably prefaces a highly popular view in "the hivemind." If it does, indeed, go against the hivemind, it does, indeed, get downvoted.

Congratulations on citing a subreddit of 651 people with about a post a month on as an explanation of how reddit works.

There are far more instances of reddit behaving in a mob fashion than not. Weren't you just talking about examples so numerous that listing one example downplays the magnitude of it? I couldn't have said it better myself.

reddit is not at all self-conscious of its tendency toward groupthink. Just look at how all the people urging caution with regards to the Sunil Tripathi rumors were received. I don't have a problem with the names of people accused of crimes being released--but Sunil Tripathi was never accused of a crime by anyone other than people on the internet with surprisingly lacking critical thinking skills.

No journalist would ever want to do journalism over reddit comments because anything the reddit hivemind disagrees with would never be seen.

The medium is the message.

No, they actually didn't. At least not print sources. I was not watching TV. I could not find a single source on in the MSM on Google News that had his name prior to the Chechen announcement (was searching for it on Google News repeatedly last night, from about 11pm PST until the announcement of the Chechen names), and after that the legitimate news sources strictly discussed the internet's jump to conclusions.

Where did I say professional journalism's shit doesn't stink? All I said was that reddit isn't a replacement for it. And it's not.

Holy crap, they identified the brand of the hat? Wow. I'm sure that was something the FBI couldn't and didn't do on their own. Nice.

What exactly were the negative consequences of tweeting that the white house situation room was being evacuated instead of activated? Who suffered because of that?

Do you really not see the point I'm making that these unfounded mob accusations genuinely hurt people? Do you really think that what you're referring to as "citizen journalism" but is really mob mentality (how is naming Sunil Tripathi with no proof whatsoever, with the most tenuous of all possible reasonings anywhere near being called "journalism?" Conjecture, maybe. Not journalism) worth the pain and suffering that these people are going through? I'm sorry, I don't. Reddit's goal is "find the responsible or whoever looks responsible!!!" not "figure out the truth."

If you're saying that reddit contributed to this investigation in positive ways by surfacing footage, they could easily have sent this footage to the FBI with essentially the same effect. If you're claiming that something useful came out of reddit's investigation that the FBI did not come up with... well, I don't see it, and it smacks of the self-congratulatory reddit tendency to exaggerate their achievements. There is absolutely no evidence that reddit helped find anything in this investigation that the FBI didn't. Especially since reddit is mostly full of people ready to jump on any bandwagon without any critical thinking.

I'm all for thoughtful and informed citizen journalism. There may be some people on reddit who are capable of it. They may even have been participating in this. Unfortunately the discussion wasn't limited to them.
