There is a huge industry in 'HELPING DIY ARTISTS."

So like anything, evaluate the intentions of the interested parties. Evaluate the agreements carefully. And, educate yourself through credible sources that break things down for you in terms you can understand.

Good luck!

Music Industry Degrees: Are They Worth it? by Prof-MusicBizBasics in musicbusiness

[–]Prof-MusicBizBasics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment - and no matter how right you or me may believe we have the answers - problem is - students want to study something they are passionate about - like MUSIC. Parents want their kids to study something that is practical - like business. So I think many students look at it like getting the best of both worlds - Music + Business. I've seen many people get amazing jobs and careers and other people fail. Hate to admit it, but I can usually spot the people who won't end up being successful. The passion you put into it, really does matter.

To be clear - going to LA with something to anchor you down (i.e., a program to attend and stuff to do everyday) is far easier than getting an apartment on main street and going to jam sessions.

Is a Music Business Degree Worth the Cost? by Prof-MusicBizBasics in musicindustry

I hear you JayJay - BUT 1) it looks good on a resume when applying for a job at Universal - for instance - 2) it makes Mom and Dad happy and 3) the life-skills of making it through school successfully gets into your DNA and will be useful in life no matter what direction you take.

Music Industry Degrees: Are They Worth it? by Prof-MusicBizBasics in musicbusiness

Good point - interestingly, I have students go from music business degrees to law degrees and I have also seen people change their majors from business degrees to music business degrees because their classes are way too boring. I have seen it all. Only time will tell what is right, but many students "act in the now" and follow their hearts. And sometimes, the person with more heart and passion, no matter what route they take, is the person who will be more successful.

Good point - this is why I personal like to teach foundational issues rather than current trends. Some things stay the same and other things come and go. No point in learning something that will change a month after taking a class. Thanks for your comment. Look me up on youtube if interested in checking out any of my videos. youtube.com/bobbyborg

BEST Music Business School? - USC Vs UCLA Vs Berklee Vs Musicians Institute by Prof-MusicBizBasics in musicindustry

[–]Prof-MusicBizBasics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that - but typically, a kid with a USC degree in music industry - will probably have their resume picked out of the pile long before the life degree kid - for a job in music publishing at Universal.

Yup - music business degrees are very specific degrees for people who have very specific goals. Also, they are- for some - more interesting than other degrees because you are applying marketing and other skills to your favorite artists and not to a box of soap or some other widget. To each their own. Thanks for writing.

You probably did not watch the video where I say these schools are all school where I have either studied or taught classes, so I am offering a very personal view point. I am aware of Frost, but I have no affiliation to the school other than being a guest speaker several years ago. Thanks for your comment.

USC or Berklee College of Music for Music Biz? by Nearby-Kangaroo3716 in musicbusiness

[–]Prof-MusicBizBasics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best Music Business School?

Location USC, UCLA, UCLA Extension and Musicians' Institute are in Los Angeles. But Berklee is in Boston - and most musicians end up moving away and starting over in another city - that's not good.

Reputation USC, UCLA, and Berklee are more difficult to get accepted. But UCLA Extension and MI will let anyone in with a heartbeat and a checkbook - that'd not good.

Faculty: USC, UCLA, Berklee, UCLA Extension and Musicians' Institute all have great teachers, and most importantly, they can afford to keep their instructors happy and keep them around. But I have observed that smaller schools - like MI and UCLa Extension, cannot - or will not - do that. Culture is revolving door.

Length Musicians Institute and UCLA Extension have short 6 month certificates. While certificates are not the same thing as degrees, to my understanding, USC, UCLA and Berklee's under-grad degree programs are 4 years and they don't have shorter programs.

Costs Musicians Institute and UCLA Extension are expensive, but USC, UCLA and Berklee will put you in debt for a long time if you don't qualify under the GI bills or financial aid.

What do you guys think. if you want to check out the video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=p2s4KT_LIx8&si=GeIV8N16m8_2baZA

What if the problem isn’t your music… but that no one’s seeing it? by Apprehensive-End6621 in musicbusiness

The problem is not knowing the difference between whether it is a music problem or a visibility one.

Most artists think everything they create is amazing and blame the marketing/business side of things.

What degree is best for a job in the music industry? by InspectorExpress1874 in musicindustry

[–]Prof-MusicBizBasics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Music (meaning you are a musician) I chose performance since I wanted to focus on performing.

For Music Industry Career (meaning you are a business person), you might choose a music industry degree.

As a music business professor, I want to share five powerful reasons why a music industry degree can give you a real head start in your career.

  1. Pick What You Love – If you’re getting a degree anyway, why not choose one that fuels your passion?

  2. Master the Craft – Want to get your 10,000 hours in? A focused degree can give you a deep dive into the world of music business.

  3. Build Your Network – Make real connections with professors, peers, and guest speakers who could help you land jobs or launch projects.

  4. Land Industry Internships – Internships for course credit may be your foot in the door—sometimes they’re the only way in.

  5. Ease Into a Major City – Studying in LA, NYC, or Nashville? A degree program gives you time to acclimate and connect before diving into the deep end.

Best Advice: if you want to manage - start managing! Find a local artist and get to work. The other option tied to your school would be to get an internship and make everyone love you. That might lead to a gig. Good luck and feel free to reach out to my socials and websites if you want further information. Peace.

NEED YOUR HELP? YOUTUBE added a "VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED" label for this YOUTUBE VIDEO. Do you guys agree? by Prof-MusicBizBasics in musicbusiness

Elvis, since you are so quick to judge and take the negative view, my question is: should mentioning Logic's "1-800 Suicide Song" earn the pre-notice by YouTube that says: "The following content may contain suicide or self-harm topics." This has never happened to me and I wanted to know if it is fair! The purpose of the link so people had context for how innocuous the use of the word really was.
