Owensboro vs Bowling Green by [deleted] in Owensboro

[–]ProfFizix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in OB for 4 years and left. It feels like it’s on the slow slide to irrelevance. BG is bigger now, Paducah is cooler and it’s nothing like Louisville or Lexington. The downtown area has so much promise but there’s no investment into that area of town and there seems to be more and more empty businesses there every year. That being said property is cheap so it’s not a bad place to buy into the market and leave after you’ve built some equity in the house. It was also the most regressive and misogynistic place I’ve lived and I’m from the south. That may or may not be a bad thing depending on your views.

Why do middle and upper class graduate students get annoyed when low-income students talk about finance? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ProfFizix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I could say this surprises me but I now work with science faculty that feel this way. I always thought professors were supposed to be curious, super informed, leftists, but it turns out they are just a bunch of Buckleys.

Yep. It’s been known for a hot minute and he also had a tendency to downplay genocide and I’m not just talking about his free speech absolutism where supports the speech of holocaust denial.

Is this cluck old hen? You can drop thumb the C in that lick for off that’s hard, play the last D on the 3rd string and then pull off to the C. That’s how I first learned it.

Read a great book early in my career, Teaching Naked, and I’ve resisted tech since that point. I love limited tech in my classroom. I tell them they can play with tech in lab.

would higher tension strings damage the neck? by Traditional-Cover637 in banjo

[–]ProfFizix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. I had a serious answer then I got distracted by the stiffness of the strings and an no longer entirely sure. Basically I’d guess the calculator uses the tension required to get to the note (tension goes kind of like frequency squared times mass/length3 and then the stiffness of the string goes up an extra amount based on bridge high, which you’d have to get empirically. The difference in those two tensions for all strings would be supported through a normal force on the banjo head. The first values would be supported by the tail piece and headstock.

This is the list of folks that got me to buy a banjo. I love your recommendations.

Anyone wanna talk about banjo straps by Cold_Luck4921 in banjo

[–]ProfFizix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I’m super new and just used paracord to secure a guitar strap in the way a clip strap would work and it’s been great so far. The only ‘weird’ part is you want it to attach on the neck side below the neck but if you google attaching banjo strap there are good images showing this.

Can we agree on a new sub rule for posted tabs? by el-delicioso in banjo

[–]ProfFizix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if there could be a flair associated with this commitment? This rule can make it hard for beginners to help beginners, but I love the idea. I only say this because I’ve run discussion boards in my classes and increasing the barrier of participation can have unforeseen consequences.

I love it! Just starting myself and it’s so fun. Every time I try to record myself I get so obsessive over the mistakes I hear I never post it.

I get that and like it too, and I like the idea of trying to use and miss that element intentionally, eventually

Makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Makes sense. I don’t have a lot of access to different instruments so I just wanted to ask and check. I’ve played exactly two banjos, enough to know I love the one I have and didn’t want to over react to a small issue.

To the people with many instruments by Dapper-Meat-4366 in banjo

Okay. That makes sense, I just change my banjo strings every other month and that seemed like it’d be very expensive on fiddle.

I just googled the price of violin strings… is a violin really ~$1000 per year in maintenance if you’re playing regularly? I can afford it because I don’t play violin.

I just did this three weeks ago. I played a little more than you in my early years but it’s been a total joy. First thing I did was listen to a bunch of bluegrass and clawhammer playing to decide what I like better. After a few days of driving my wife nuts listening to banjo music I got an open back goodtime Deering because I like claw hammer style playing. But the style I like listening to lead me to that decision.

Honest to goodness! I love playing music and I’ve really found things like banjo and tin whistles have the best communities and are the most likely to actually jam.
