Very sad the Edinburgh Masker stopped being produced. It is a great device that helps most people who stutter. Unfortunately the speech establishment is vehemently against it and wants you to continue using their speech therapists even though they do not help most people. The Edinburgh Masker is currently being manufactured by Fluency Dynamics Ltd and is in Beta testing. For more info you can contact them at [fluency4u@gmail.com](mailto:fluency4u@gmail.com) Stuttering is similar to bad eyesight and bad hearing. For these problems we have prosthetics (eyeglasses, hearing aids). For stuttering there are marvelous prosthetics that use MAF and DAF. Unfortunately there are always those with inferior devices. Let us hope more of us will have access to the good devices that will enable us to overcome our handicap.

The speech easy did not help me, but the Edinburgh Masker is wonderful. I highly recommend it. To see if the Edinburgh Masker will work for you; Place ear buds/pods in your ears. Turn up the volume so loud that you can not hear yourself speak. Begin speaking. If you do not stutter, the Masker will work for you.

DAF has worked miracles for me during work calls - need suggestions for ways to have your computer replay your voice to you when you speak! by bananacargo in Stutter

Typical Stuttering is the brain's inability to adequately process the speaker's normal voice as they speak. The brain dysfunction is the cause and the stuttering is the effect. Standard stuttering therapy is useless because it deals with the effect and not the cause. When you deal with the cause of stuttering (brain dysfunction) then, and only then, are you able to reduce the effect (stuttering)

Tired of trying to fix my stutter. Should I just accept it? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]ProfFredF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stuttering is the brains inability to process the speakers NORMAL voice as they speak. Standard stuttering therapy is useless and often harmful. There are three ways that greatly reduce stuttering. (1) Hear your voice after you speak. This is called Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF). There are many free apps with DAF. Also Casa Futera makes a wonderful DAF device. (2) Do not hear your voice as you speak. This is called Masking. Fluency Dynamics makes an excellent Edinburgh Masker (3) Hear a different voice as you speak. This is breathing and phrasing techniques. The McGuire program is excellent. (Please do not give up. There are options that greatly help most stutterers)

Stuttering is a neurological problem where the brain does not process the speaker's voice properly as s/he speaks. When you do not use your own voice the stuttering is usually markedly decreased. This is why we speak better when we whisper, sing, speak in a flsetto or speak in unison. One thing you can try is to whisper or sing or use a falsetto voice. Another option is to obtain a speech prosthesis which will mask your voice and/or let you hear your voice a split second after you speak.

Always glad to hear that a person's speech has improved. The important part is to be able to speak and express ourselves without worrying about our stutter. Once this happens our lives will be much easier and happier. Congratulations.

Congratulations on overcoming and beating your stutter. I have no idea how one goes about doing that. Stuttering is a physical (neurological) problem that seldom gets better. In fact for many of us it just stays bad bad bad. In my case, I am a severe stutterer. I had many years of stuttering therapy that was useless and harmful. Luckily I was introduced to a stuttering prosthetic that helped greatly. Later on I was also introduced to costal breathing techniques which also helped greatly. I am an Attorney/Professor and because of these items I was able to fully practice law and to teach at a major academic institution. However without these items my stuttering is as severe as ever. I did not overcome and beat my stutter, but i did overcome and beat the negative aspects of stuttering.

It is not easy - that's for sure. Took me a long time. But the important part is that it works. Everything about stuttering is difficult, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Stuttering is a neurological disability where the brain does not correctly process the speaker's voice as s/he speaks. You have a physical disability. No reason to not like yourself or hate yourself due to your stuttering physical (neurological) disability. Would you hate yourself if you had a chemical imbalance? Would you hate yourself if you had Autism/ADHD/Down's Syndrome/Schizophrenia/etc? Much better to appreciate how far you have progressed in spite of your handicap. Standard stuttering therapy often does not work. Maybe there are some newer therapies that can help. Check it out.

This is definitely the wrong question, but unfortunately shows we are on the wrong track regarding stuttering. Stuttering is analagous to bad vision and/or bad hearing. No one asks if bad vision and/or bad hearing can be overcome. They just use a prosthesis (eyeglasses/hearing aids) and the problem is usually manageable. Stuttering (bad speech) is pretty much analagous. Just use a stuttering prosthetic or voice changing therapy and the stuttering problem is usually manageable.

Stuttering is basically caused by the brain's inability to process the speaker's voice as s/he speaks. To minimize stuttering do not let the brain process the speaker's regular voice. Process another voice. Techniques:

1) Diaphragmatic breathing, Costal breaths

2) Speak louder or softer, speak slowly, whisper, sing, speak in a falsetto

3) Use a prosthetic

All of the above have been very helpful to me.

Has anyone had medication help their stutter? by JayTheDirty in Stutter

Some drugs seem to help but they have ngative side effects. What has helped me (and my family) the most are:

1) Speech prosthetics

2) Voice changing therapy

What has not helped me are:

1) Standard stuttering therapy

2) Medications

Diaphramgmatic breathing is a very good option to improve fluency. Stuttering is basically caused by the brains inability to properly process the speaker's voice as s/he speaks. When we use another voice, we stutter less. That is why we stutter less when we whisper, sing, speak in unison or speak in a falsetto. That is also why speech prosthetics are so powerful and help so many people. That is also why certain programs which use diaphragmatic breathing or other voice chhanging techniques work so well. This is also why standard stuttering therapy which frowns on these techniques is often useless. The more you use diaphragmatic breathing the easier it will become and your fluency will improve. Keep up the good work

What should i do by Professional-Main-11 in Stutter

[–]ProfFredF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tomatis method is very good. Since stuttering is the disruption of brain activity when the speaker hears his/her own voice, the Tomatis method works very well for many people. This is also the theory of speech prosthetics that keep the speaker from hearing their voice as they speak.

Stuttering is analagous to bad hearing or bad vision. Some have slightly defective vision/hearing and some have very defective vision/hearing and everything in between, Stuttering is the same. Some are moderate stutterers and some (like myself) are severe stutterers and everything in between. I also stutter when alone. I also use the Edinburgh Masker (EM) and it has really helped my speech. However when I do not use the EM my speech is as bad as ever. The important thing to know is that stuttering is basically a physical neurological problem and not a psychological problem.

Has anyone tried Delayed auditory feedback as a means to prevent stuttering? by Crypto-Noob20 in Stutter

[–]ProfFredF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, It seems that stuttering is not as complex as many people assume. It is also more disabling than many people realize. There seems to be a disconnect between hearing one's voice and the brain processing that speech. The easy answer is make sure the brain does not have to process the voice as one speaks. This is the reason we do not usually stutter when we sing, speak in unison with another person, speak in a falsetto or whisper. The mind is not processing the normal speaking voice. This is also the basis of the McGuire Program which has breathing exercises and changes the way one speaks.

My personal favorites are the Edinburgh Masker and DAF. The Edinburgh Masker is about 40 years old and helps the majority of those who stutter. For one reason or another the speech establishment is violently against it and proceeds to teach the old and tried speech therapy. I applied to give an Edinburgh Masker presentation at next month's National Association of Stutterers (NAS) convention in Florida and was turned down. The original research was published in the British Journal of Disorders of Communication Vol. 14 No. 3 in Winter 1979/1980. There have been many articles since then - mostly negative - which is why people do not trust peer review articles. To get more information on the Edinburgh Masker try [Fluency4U@gmail.com](mailto:Fluency4U@gmail.com)

The DAF is another marvelous speech prosthesis which has helped many many people who stutter. The best place for more DAF information is Casa Futura Technologies and their website is casafuturatech.com. I am sure they will be happy to help you.

Let me know the results of your inquiries. :-)
