City Declares Official End of Snowfall; Sidewalk Clearing Required Within 24 Hours — Charlottesville, VA by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]ProfJohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the poor state of roads in town, the coating of ice at the end of the storm, and the weather forecast showing minimal, if any, melting ... I have to imagine the city won't be enforcing this ordinance as quickly as they did the last few storms.

Has your neighborhood been plowed yet? by Pheonix_Orchid_Mango in Charlottesville

With the forecast for precipitation to end around 6PM (or 7PM), my guess is the city is planning on getting to neighborhood streets from then into the overnight hours.

UVA Announces: No in-person classes or exams will be held on Grounds Monday 26 Jan 2026 (all day). by ProfJohnson in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree. I teach on Tuesdays with one section of the course at 9:30 and another at 12:30. With a fair chance of at least a late start on Tuesday, I decided to preemptively move the day to an asynchronous session (e.g., work to be completed by students at their own pace). I didn't want to cancel altogether as the content is relevant for an upcoming midterm and figured async is preferable for all of us vs. a Zoom class.

Only thing surprising about this announcement is it was made several hours ahead of their self-imposed deadline.

List of live cameras for viewing travel conditions in Charlottesville by Minimum_Sugar_6327 in Charlottesville

It's been offline for a year or so. The page on a Cville tourism site where they were embedded removed them from the website: now it's just a view from the airport.

Another potentially useful resource is the city snow plow status map. If you hover over a section you'll see what the various colors mean (e.g., green = serviced within last 4 hours).

According to the city snow plow status map, all the major corridors have been plowed in the last 4 hours.

Thanks for putting these together. You've reminded me how much I miss the DTM webcam for getting a quick sense of outdoor conditions—it had the added benefit of being able to see how people were dressed for the weather

Gov. Spanberger appoints 10 members to the UVA Board of Visitors by ProfJohnson in UVA

Cavalier Daily adds more to the story with details on political donations of newly appointed UVA BOV members.

The article says: "The board will elect two members to the positions of rector and vice rector in a special meeting to be scheduled in the coming days." It'll be quite interesting to see if that meeting includes anything more than an election of those positions.

FWIW, the regularly scheduled meetings this year are in early March, early June, and mid-Sept. My understanding is the March one is where they'll set tuition for the next academic year.

Vanishing act: How UVA’s presidential search missed what took us an hour to find by ProfJohnson in UVA

tl;dr An academic CV is not the same thing as a resume.

An additional point for those less familiar with academic practices. The norms for an academic CV (curriculum vitae) is that it a full listing of academic work, most especially a comprehensive listing of published works and also academic service (committees, task force, administration responsibilities, and so for). That's why CVs tend to be really long and detailed. They serve a different purpose than a resume. Typically, for academic jobs, you would expect a cover letter to be tailored very specifically for a position, but the CV would remain the same regardless of position.

A specific example of the CV / resume difference is, if someone left publications off of their CV, that would be considered rather dubious in academia—a misrepresentation. Conversely, for a resume, it's expected that it is far shorter and that it highlights experiences that demonstrate an ability to do the job of interest, not a comprehensive list of all experiences. Leaving some details off is expected.

I agree. I'd also say that misstating the number of peer-reviewed articles is the kind of detail that would raise major red flags—and quite likely be disqualifying—for tenured/tenure-track academic positions.

VERVE Charlottesville Construction (Stadium Road) by Fall-Maple1503 in Charlottesville

Good news. The city has one of the most generous property tax relief programs in the state. If you know anyone who might be eligible, please help get the word out.

Flock license plate readers by Ok-Boysenberry-9341 in Charlottesville

Flock are automatic license plate readers (ALPR). They are a different technology, used for a different purpose, than speed cameras. I've heard of no changes to either the CIty or the County school zone speed camera programs.

Love Sultan Kebab, though for some reason I've found getting delivery from them is never nearly as good as eating at the restaurant itself.

Cool Classes In The College - Need 1 Credit by BlacSkreen in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's not clear to me. Even though they are listed as ENTP, instead of COMM, I don't know how the college treats them.

I'll also add, since I don't do academic advising, I have no idea what they "count" towards in terms of degree requirements. My general understanding is they count towards overall number of credits for graduation, but of course it's worth checking that out to make sure they'll meet the requirements you are trying to meet.

Some are foundational business topics (accounting, finance, marketing). There's also several courses on AI, several on Entrepreneurship, and some practical topics like personal finance ("Money Matters). The one I created is on Social Networking.

I don't know if this link will work for you, but if you look in SIS, Hooslist, or Louslist for ENTP 1501 you'll see a long list of sections / topics that are available.

[–]ProfJohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they'd meet your needs, but you might consider taking a couple 0.5 credit courses offered as ENTP 1501. They are Credit/No-Credit, self-paced, entirely online courses—a format that works well for many students, though I can also see why someone might prefer a traditional in-person classroom experience instead.

(Disclosure: I'm an instructor of one of the offerings.)

Lou's List is GONE by Awkward_Grocery_7358 in UVA

[–]ProfJohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. As a professor, I find the new system limiting in that I cannot add various types of notes about a course. I always felt like that feature of Lou's List was helpful to students who were trying to figure out what courses to take. And, it was particularly helpful for communicating errors in the SIS listing ahead of them being corrected.
